WINGed Words
The Reverend Cynthia Mackey, UCC Minister of Education
Hi Everyone,

This week I am thinking about “big deals” that happen in life. I had a friend, who has since passed away, but always used to tell me, “There are no big deals in life.” Hmm. I am not sure about that. I think there are big deals, but once we acknowledge them and talk about them and feel the anger, pain, loss or whatever feelings go with them, then they become less and less of a big deal. It does not happen overnight, but as time passes and we continue to acknowledge how we feel about whatever the situation may be, the more the “big” of the deal is diminished. However, in our culture, I think we are encouraged to minimize the big things that happen to us in life–positive or negative. We may be experiencing a terrible loss and yet, we say, “I am fine.” Or, we may achieve a great accomplishment and we say, “It was nothing.” These are cultural fibs we may tell ourselves.

So, that brings me to the heart of my message for this week about healing. We are all healing from something. It may be a personal loss or illness or financial set back or fractured relationship. These things come large and small, all the time. Collectively, globally, we are healing from a more than yearlong pandemic!

Yesterday’s Daily Word reading was on the topic of healing in the physical sense. The reading begins with the affirmation, “I affirm that God’s perfect life is the vitalizing power that heals me.” The emphasis of the passage is that the presence of God within each of us is our healing power and this realization helps us to know our divine wholeness. Divine wholeness is the key to any healing, whether it be mental, physical, or spiritual. We are perfectly and wonderfully made and we are whole.

Unity literature is filled with ideas about healing and wholeness, but this week I was drawn to Charles Fillmore’s book Christian Healing. Once again, he reminds us that our universe centers in our mind and in our thinking. In lesson four, “The Formative Power of Thought,” Fillmore says that “mind is the starting point of every thought and act.” We co-create with God to form our lives and situations. “God creates in the ideal and man carries out in the manifest what God has idealized.” So, what does all this mean for our particular situation? Each of us has “mountains” to climb–large and small. However, we need God and each other to be able to do it. First, we must acknowledge the “mountain” is there. As long as we deny it, nothing will change. Then, it is important to talk with a trusted friend or like-minded individual about how we see our “mountain” and how we feel about it. A problem shared is a problem cut in half. Then, through talking, listening, feeling, praying (and, often for me, reading Unity literature which reminds me of Universal Principle), we are able to have our thinking changed to align with God as the Principle of wholeness and divine love. Once that happens, the “big deals” in my life begin to diminish in size so they become manageable and I am no longer overwhelmed by them and can begin to continue my forward march right over the “mountain.” Or, perhaps there is no “mountain” there at all, anymore.

I am not sure if you missed me last week, but I spent a couple of days at St. Pete beach recharging and enjoying our first trip in a year and a half. I sipped coffee on my balcony, put feet in the waves (still a little cool for this Florida girl to swim) and we enjoyed a cookout and picnic at Ft. Desoto, outdoors and mask-free with fully vaccinated friends. I came home feeling more optimistic than ever that we are slowly emerging from our pandemic isolation. So, if you are fully vaccinated, enjoy some time outdoors. After all. we are blessed to live in paradise. I encourage everyone to get vaccinated. It is our path to freedom!
