WINGed Words
Hi, Everyone!

Oh boy, its December 1st and the Christmas season has officially begun! Our Christmas tree is up, albeit without any ornaments on it yet. This past weekend, my husband and son put up our outside lights. I love outside lights! So, I was thinking about some of the ideas we talked about last week on setting up new traditions or at least being open to new traditions for this exceptional year. I remembered yesterday’s Daily Word reading on freedom. The affirmation was “The freedom of Spirit is mine.” The reading went on to say that freedom is a choice, thought by thought and day by day. As we release old patterns of thought and behavior, we give ourselves the opportunity to learn and grow. As we grow spiritually and discover new paths, we realize our authenticity, wholeness, and worthiness! Just reading and digesting those ideas made me feel lighter and freer.

In this time of Covid, we may feel less free. We feel restricted in our movements and in our activities. We may also feel restricted in our choices, but that part is not true. I always have the choice as to how I think about any person, idea, or situation. Emmet Fox has a chapter in The Sermon on the Mount entitled “As a Man Thinketh.” In that chapter, Fox states that, “If you truly live this life then it does not in the least matter what your present circumstances may be, or what difficulties you may have to struggle against, you will triumph over them.” This is a bold statement, but a truth we need to hear in these times. What does he mean by, “if you truly live this life?” Backing up in the chapter, he says we must change our thinking and turn away from resentment, self-centeredness, jealousy, fear, self-pity, and self-righteousness to name a few. Ouch! Releasing those ways of thinking is not always easy and often involves patterns of thinking and behaviors that we have had for a long time and that we may not at first glance even be aware of in ourselves. I believe that the first thing we must do is become willing –willing to change our thinking, willing to allow our thinking to be changed through prayer and through reading and learning spiritual ideas, and then new ways of thinking will be revealed to us.

In my experience, this has been a process that has taken place over time – sometimes painlessly and at other times painfully – but, with the passage of time, I have become freer and the process has become easier. Truth found in the Jesus Christ teaching “is an entirely positive influence. It comes into a [person’s] life to enlarge and enrich it, to make it fuller and wider and better; never to restrict it. You cannot lose anything that is worth having through acquiring a knowledge of Truth,” according to Emmet Fox.

I agree wholeheartedly with these ideas. Through the many years I have been involved in Unity, my life has been enhanced beyond my wildest dreams! So, in this time of outer restrictions for our own health and safety, and in considerations of others, it is possible to be free: free to develop spiritually as the Daily Word reading stated and free to rid ourselves of limiting thoughts and develop our spiritual nature. We can live limitlessly, no matter the outer appearances!

One of the limits we may be feeling now is our ability to be together and learn together about these ideas, so I invite you to join our fun Wings Book Study on Tuesdays at 12:00 on Zoom. This week, we will be studying this very chapter in Emmet Fox’s The Sermon on the Mount. We have the limitless internet at our disposal, LOL!
