Welcome to November, or, as my cousin who lives in Michigan called it, “Snow-vember.” Yes, there will likely be snow in Michigan and a little sweater weather for us here!
As everyone knows, last Saturday was Halloween. However, some of you may not have noticed that it was also a full moon--a blue moon (the second full moon in a month)--and the first full moon on Halloween since 1944! Wow! What that made me think about was how important it is to be mindful of happenings around us. Those events are unusual and some might say miraculous. The superstitious person might try to make something mystical about it but for me it just shows that if I awaken each day with faith, I will see God’s marvels all around me. Faith is an incredibly powerful force in our lives and in the Universe.
As Truth Students, we need to ask ourselves where our faith is placed. Faith in negative things can draw those things into my life just as easily as faith in the good can draw my good to me. In actuality, perhaps the former is a little easier because, depending on the lens with which we view the world, we can often see the negative more easily than the positive. Our culture, our senses, and often the venues we use to receive information (television media, social media, other written material printed or online) can give us an unending supply of the negative. So, what are we to do?
For this Truth student, the answer is to turn to God and a place where I receive Truth–Unity Literature. This week, I turned to Lessons in Truth by H. Emilie Cady. Lesson Six is entitled “Faith.” She begins the chapter with a reference to our traditional view of faith which has been “often scorned” “by so-called thinking people” or chalked up to “blind faith,” which may be good for certain groups of people, but not for mature seekers. Nothing could be further from the Truth, according to Cady. The goal is to develop an understanding faith--a faith that realizes that everything in the outer is formed of the unseen substance by our faith. “What is seen was made from things that are not visible” (Heb. 11:3). When we understand this, then we know that whatever we want “is in this surrounding invisible substance, and faith is the power that brings it into actuality.”
According to Cady, faith is not dependent on physical facts or on the evidence of the senses. It comes through our inner intuition, “the Spirit of Truth ever living at the center of our being.” Faith is like a ray of light shot out from the center–God–through the open door of our intuition into us. This ray of light is giving us access to the All Good.
Okay, so I can hear you asking, “Where is the practical application in all of this?” In a nutshell, we have desires for goodness, abundance, health, love, joy, and much more in our hearts. These desires are placed there by God and our access to obtaining the desires of our heart is faith. Remember, with God, the desire to give and the giving are one. Raise your consciousness to receive the wonderful and excellent gifts waiting for you, within your reach. All you need to do is ask and be willing to receive. Always rejoice and thank God--not for what you hope you will have, but for what you do have. As Cady noted: “Desire for anything is the thing itself in incipiency.”
