On Sunday, I celebrated my birthday! Well, actually, I started celebrating last Thursday and it continued through Monday, LOL! I love to celebrate my birthday. I have always liked to celebrate birthdays and holidays, but in the last 25 years or so I have enjoyed it more, probably because I am a planner and I love it when a plan comes together. (I think someone used to say that on a TV show.) I love to plan activities and especially I love to plan travel. Well, all of that is quite challenging in this pandemic and some not possible at all. Anyway, I decided to plan according to what was possible rather than what was not! That is good Unity thinking – always look at the possibilities!
Of course, my next thought was to go to my beloved Unity books for some inspiration on celebrating! What book would be better than Eric Butterworth’s Celebrate Yourself! (the first chapter has the same name)? This concept may be new to some Truth Students. Many of us may have grown up in families or situations where we were not appreciated or complimented or showered with affection, but what I began to learn (oh, that 25 years ago or so), was that God is my ultimate parent and my ultimate family and that He appreciates me, compliments me and showers His affection on me. I am His wonderful creation and so are YOU! These ideas of self-appreciation and self-celebration take some practice so let’s go to Celebrate Yourself and see what Butterworth has to say about that. Butterworth reminds us that we have a tremendous power within ourselves and that we must sacrifice our old ideas of self-doubt, low self-esteem, unworthiness, and fear, in order to feel the true zest for life. He quotes Charles Fillmore who says that our lives should be a “journey of jubilance.”
Butterworth continues telling us this is not an excuse to live indulgently, but rather that the word celebrate means “to honor.” So, essentially, it is not about an outward activity, but about “giving a very special blessing” to someone or something. We are not mere spectators to life but active participants. As such, we can each become a “conscious channel for the cosmic flow.”
As we make our way through our daily lives, bless what is around you--the sunshine or clouds the trees, grass, people you see. You get the idea. Get into a celebration consciousness, celebrating from within, not looking forward to something but “looking forward from an inward flame of life.” Remember, “a happy life is one in tune with the inner flow.” Happiness is not centered in outer things; it comes from within.
So, no matter what is going on, celebrate yourself! You do not need a birthday or special occasion to celebrate your talents, your friendships, or just a beautiful day! We are in a situation where there is much focus on what we cannot do. So, find something you can do and celebrate it! I did!
