This Sunday @ UCC: Burning Bowl Service Lesson Title: Letting Go of Holding On
|
|
Inspired by lyrics to “Letting Go of Holding On” by Richard Mekdeci
“I’m letting go of holding on. God is my shepherd, I shall not want.
I’m letting go of holding on, seeking first the kingdom of God.
I let go of the feelings that feed on lack and greed. I let go of the reasons keeping me in need.
I let go of the fear that there’s never enough, and I stop holding on, to what is not love.” |
| | One of Unity’s oldest and dearest traditions, the Burning Bowl Service, is our opportunity to come together as we release the limitations of the past year and set our intentions for the wonderful New Year ahead.
Let’s release the old year and welcome the new during our 11:00 AM service this Sunday!
In the past, we have held Burning Bowl/New Year's Watch services on the last evening of the year. But, we found that it wasn't ideal to bring folks out on the road that evening or have them walking around on the lawn after sundown here to deposit their slips of paper into a burning vessel. Also, our indoor sprinkler system would tend to make it rain indoors in the presence of smoke from a burning vessel. So, to make this cleansing ritual more accessible to more people, we moved it to the last Sunday morning of the year
During the service, our folded slips of paper with things we are now releasing that we've individually written on them will be passed to the aisle seat and deposited in a paper bag taped to each aisle armrest. After the service, ushers will collect the bags and place them in an outdoor "firepit" on the west side of the Peace Chapel at about 12:15, where all who wish to step outside can witness them being set aflame. What a great feeling!
As Carl Sandburg wrote,
"The past is a bucket of ashes, so live not in your yesterdays . . . but in the here and now. Keep moving and forget the post mortems . . . ."
Let's affirm 2020 Vision and prepare for 2020 as our Year of Plenty! |
