So, I know someone that got crushed by Auntie I.R.S....
The sad part is that it wasn’t 100% his fault.
Here's What Happened...
To make a long story short, my friend was the Executive Director of good-sized nonprofit. They owned about $100 Million in real estate at the time, the annual operating budget was several million per year. But a large portion of their annual revenue came from federal grants.
Unbeknownst to him, some money went missing... a lot of money.
Thankfully Auntie I.R.S caught it during an audit. But since federal grant money was missing the FBI got involved.
It took a few years, but my friend was ultimately exonerated, and they found the real culprit (a trifling employee).
So, What’s the Lesson?
Get a good accountant!
My friend was an excellent leader who built a nonprofit that changed the lives of thousands of people in his community. But he took his eye off the money and never developed sufficient financial controls to safeguard the organization from internal fraud and abuse.
And since he was the leader, he was responsible.
So, again, What’s the Lesson?
Don't let this be you!
Instead, learn from the mistakes of others and start building your financial infrastructure the right way from day one!
