Subject: When Is A Beaver A Fish?

In the 17th-century, the Bishop of Quebec had a problem on his hands.

Catholic settlers were flooding into the area from Europe and these pious men and women were having a devil of a time observing the Church’s Friday dietary restrictions, since edible fish was in short supply.

At the time, the rivers and streams around Quebec were teeming with beaver. And beaver makes for good eating.

So the Bishop of Quebec asked the Catholic Church to recognize the beaver as a fish so his flock could eat it on Fridays during Lent.

After all, the beaver is a strong swimmer and lives in water like a fish. Close enough, right?

The Church seemed to think so and declared the mammalian heathen a Christian fish.

The point?

We can come up with explanations and excuses for just about anything.

Would-be entrepreneurs do it all the time.

Rather than get to work on the heavy lifting of starting a business, they come up with excuse after excuse to explain away their inaction.

I’ve been there. It sure didn’t do my business any favors.

That’s why I rap about five of the most common and destructive excuses entrepreneurs can’t afford to make over on ye olde blog:
