I’m a big fan of Bruce Springsteen’s music.
And one of my favorite tunes from The Boss is “No Surrender”.
To me, the song is about fighting through adversity to make your dreams come true.
Maybe that sounds cliche. And maybe it is.
But, when that sentiment is brought to life by the thundering beats, soaring melodies, and sing along chorus of Springsteen and his might, immortal E Street Band… well, cliche or not, it sure as hell gets my blood pumping.
Anyway, the point?
Today marks my five year anniversary as a freelance copywriter.
And the reason I’ve been able to do this for five years, and succeed on a level that has blown away everything I could have imagined, is because of one thing.
It’s because I refused to fail.
Or, as Springsteen puts it:
No retreat, baby, no surrender.
When I got started as a copywriter five years ago I set a goal for myself, pumped myself up (with Springsteen, Tony Robbins, loads of copywriting books, etc.), and started moving forward.
Some days I took massive leaps forward.
Other days it took all I had to move forward an inch.
But no matter how difficult the challenge or obstacle, retreat was not an option.
Surrender was not an option.
And that, more than anything else, has contributed to my success as a copywriter.
If you’re interested, I did an interview talking more about this (and revealing loads of other lessons I’ve learned in five years of successful freelancing) that you can dig here:
