Hey Friend,
It’s Paul.
I wanted to update you on where I’m at choosing a niche and services…
… and I’d also like to ask a small favor.
First the update:
I’ve chosen B2B telecommunications and solar energy as the niches for my new writing business. Yes, it’s two niches.
There’s a couple of reasons I’ve chosen two niches instead of just one:
First, earlier this year I built a list of prospects in the solar energy market but I didn’t really do anything with it.
And I didn’t want to waste this list. BUT… I’m also really interested in telecommunications and have limited (very limited) experience writing for the market.
So that’s why I’ve settled on B2B telecommunications and solar energy.
But here’s the thing:
Even though I’ll be writing for two niches, I’m only going to offer ONE service.
Specifically, email marketing.
By focusing on email marketing I’ll be able to position myself as a specialist, even though the markets I’ll write for are fairly broad.
So why am I focusing on email marketing?
There are four main reasons:
First, there’s a big demand for email marketing in both B2C and B2B companies. That means there’s potentially plenty of work.
Second, emails are shorter, bite-sized projects which is what I prefer to work on when entering a new market.
Third, email marketing has a high perceived value and, therefore, commands a higher fee per project than, say, writing blog posts.
Fourth, I have loads of experience with email marketing. This was important to me because I have next to no experience in writing for either the B2B telecommunications of solar energy markets.
So instead of positioning myself as an expert in a particular market (i.e. solar energy), I can position myself as an expert in a particular writing service (i.e. email marketing).
My theory is that this will help me work with B2B telecom and solar energy companies who would otherwise scoff at my lack of relevant industry experience.
So that’s the update. And here’s the favor:
Would you please take 1 minute and share with me the niche / market and service you’ve chosen for your writing business?
I’m excited to hear what you’ve chosen, and why.
So please reply to this email and let me know!
Okay, so what’s next?
Well, I’ve got a blog post / podcast on choosing a writing niche and services that I was hoping to have live by now.
Alas, it’s not quite ready. But I’ll be working through the weekend (apologies to my wife!) to get that to you by Monday.
Next week I’m going to share my marketing plan with you. This marketing plan will include:
- Website details
- How I’m building a list of prospects
- My cold email marketing strategy
- LinkedIn marketing strategies
- And a whole lot more!
So if you’ve chosen a writing niche and services, next week we’ll start getting you ready to find clients who will pay you for your writing services!
Sound good? Great!
Then have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see ya next week.
Oh, and before you forget:
Go ahead and shoot me a quick email letting me know what writing niche and services you’ve chosen for your writing biz.
Talk soon,
Paul “working on the weekend” Buzan
