This month we launched the Transformative Cities 2018: People’s Choice Award - for which we invite you to vote - complimenting radical people-led initiatives to spread the stories of these inspiring communities working on real alternatives. We focused on communities working on local solutions for water, energy and housing and compiled 32 inspiring stories from 19 countries, featured in the Atlas of Utopias. Nine of these stories are selected for you to vote on.

The EU has made migration control a central goal of its foreign policy, rapidly expanding border externalisation measures that require neighbouring countries to act as the EU's border guards. The resulting tragedies aren’t just unfortunate results of war or conflict elsewhere, but also the direct consequence of Europe’s policies on migration since the ‘85 Schengen agreement.
This report examines 35 countries, prioritised by the EU, and finds authoritarian regimes emboldened to repress civil society, vulnerable refugees forced to turn to more dangerous and deadly routes, and European arms and security firms thriving on the surge in funding for border security systems and technologies.

On 7 May 2018, the International Narcotics Control Board held a meeting with civil society representatives on “the use of cannabis for medical and non-medical purposes”. The meeting brought together a number of representatives of non-governmental organisations, selected by the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs, and members of the Board.
Transnational Institute associate fellow and director of the Global Drug Policy Observatory Prof. Dave Bewley-Taylor, delivered a statement on how states can reconcile treaty obligations with democratically mandated policy shifts at the national level to a legally regulated cannabis market, with due regard for international law, and what role the Board can play in this process. |

La UE ha convertido el control de la migración en un objetivo clave de sus relaciones exteriores, expandiendo unas medidas de externalización de las fronteras que exigen que los países vecinos actúen como guardias fronterizos de Europa. Este informe examina 35 países, priorizados por la UE, y encuentra regímenes autoritarios alentados a reprimir a la sociedad civil, refugiados vulnerables obligados a recurrir a rutas más peligrosas y letales, y empresas de armas y seguridad europeas que prosperan con el incremento de fondos para sistemas y tecnologías de seguridad fronteriza.

La Alianza contra la Pobreza Energética en Catalunya ha impulsado un cambio de paradigma que pasa por apartar a las personas afectadas por un modelo energético injusto del papel de víctimas para situarlas como sujetos políticos activos que reclaman sus derechos. Las grandes empresas energéticas se están sintiendo incómodas debido a la creciente conciencia y presión públicas, y el reto ahora consiste en garantizar que cumplan con la ley y cancelen las deudas ilegítimas.
