Dear reader,

International negotiations on climate action are stagnating, while profit-driven energy models continue to escalate the climate crisis. They fail to decarbonise our energy systems, and do not provide universal access to clean, affordable energy. We need to unite globally to transition to public energy systems rooted in justice, solidarity and democracy.

A whole mythology aims to persuade us that the private sector, free markets, cheaper prices and decentralisation can decarbonise the energy system — and that intellectual property rights and trade and investment protection agreements are necessary to facilitate this. These myths keep policy-makers, social movements and communities from building the public power systems that can democratically decarbonise society.

However,  groups fighting for energy democracy at all levels of society are leading resistance and proposing remedies towards a better future.

TNI has been producing content on a wide range of topics around climate crisis, energy democracy, public ownership, and Just Transition(s). In this special newsletter, we present to you the broad range of our work. Our hope is that this collection of material is of use to activists, scholars and journalists, to continue posing critical questions and organising for just transitions to popular power systems.

Dismantling Green Colonialism

Energy and Climate Justice in the Arab Region

'Demonstrates that the climate crisis - along with mainstream responses to it - is playing out along colonial lines. It's time to face up to this reality and build an anti-colonial struggle in response.'

In the face of the ever-worsening climate crisis, this report aims to challenge the six harmful but influential energy transition myths. Together, these myths aim to persuade us that the private sector, free markets, cheaper prices and decentralisation can decarbonise the energy system — and that intellectual property rights and trade and investment protection agreements are necessary to facilitate this. These myths keep policy-makers, social movements and communities from defending, building and advocating for real solutions: public power systems that can democratically decarbonise society.

Our Future is Public: Energy Democracy Movements Declaration

The Energy Democracy Declaration is a result of a two-day Energy sector meeting as part of the international Our Future is Public conference in Santiago, Chile, that involved Indigenous representatives, trade unions, ecofeminists, climate justice organisations, solidarity collectives and NGOs. “Green” Multinationals have hijacked the Energy Transition:

Public Power can save it

Webinar (3-4 pm CET) on Tuesday, Nov 21st, 2023

The planet is likely to surpass the 1.5C global warming threshold. At the same time, Bloomberg New Energy Finance has recently stated that “the outlook for energy transition (looks) extremely bright.” What’s going wrong?

This webinar will expose the business models of “green” multinationals, alongside the private market model that underpins them. Join us, and find out how these companies are wrecking the climate and preventing policy makers, social movements and communities from building real solutions: public power systems that can democratically decarbonise society.

Sign up for a far-reaching discussion about critical Energy Transition analyses and social movement developments.
