Dear Friend,

This year marks a momentous occasion for TNI. We are not only celebrating our 50th anniversary, but we are also expanding our fellowship to 53 members!

50 years of TNI Fellowship

Since 1974, TNI has been a hub for progressive thought and social change. TNI’s history has been entwined with the history of global social movements and their struggle for economic, social and environmental justice. Our inaugural director, Eqbal Ahmad, quickly established an international fellowship of leading progressive intellectuals. This fellowship has thrived ever since, with many prominent individuals filling its ranks over the years including John Berger, Susan George, Walden Bello, Ambalavaner Sivanandan.

Our Fellows and Social Movements

We believe research should be a tool for social justice, informing and empowering movements fighting for a more just world. This is why our fellowship is not driven by doing research for its own sake. TNI has cultivated a network of research fellows specialising in a wide range of fields, including economics, politics, sociology, ecology, human rights, and international relations. Our Fellows tackle critical global issues like drug policy reform, environmental justice, energy democracy, migration, global trade, and corporate power and are actively involved in different social movements pushing for social and environmental justice.

We look forward to seeing this new community of scholar activists turn ideas into movement.

Support our Associate!

Dr. Boris Kagarlitsky, a prominent Russian left-wing intellectual and TNI Associate, was sentenced to five years in prison by Russian authorities. They claim he was "justifying terrorism" for his opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Support Boris by signing the petition demanding his immediate release! In addition to signing the petition, please consider donating to Boris' cause. Your contributions support the campaign for his release and cover crucial legal expenses.

Crisis in the Pa-O Region

The ethnic Pa-O region in southern Shan State has been promoted as a ‘model’ ceasefire area by successive military governments in Myanmar. During the past two months, peace agreements have collapsed, and humanitarian emergency is spreading rapidly in the latest war-zone since the SAC coup. In this commentary, Khun Oo analyses the factors behind the ceasefire breakdown, the divisions in Pa-O society under military rule, and the patterns in conflict and displacement, arguing that solutions can only be found through inter-ethnic unity and the creation of a federal democratic state.

From Silos to A Pan-African Front

Millions on the African continent do not have access to clean drinking water. The current state can be traced back to Africa's colonial past, when water was claimed and used for colonial economic projects only, with access for social uses restricted based on race and class. This legacy continues today, as water resources are being privatized by corporations that create artificial scarcity through unequal distribution. The Africa Water Justice Network (AWJN) emerged to unite like-minded movements across the continent, at both national and local levels, in order to achieve common ownership of water resources.

This increase in violence demands that we urgently reconsider our global strategies and advocate for neutrality as a fundamental tool for building peace.
