How does Brazil’s turn to the far right effect the rest of the world? What does it mean for people fighting for social justice, and what kind of solidarity is needed?
Informal discussion with Gonzalo Berron (TNI) and Celia Alldridge (FOEI).
Gonzalo Berrón, TNI Associate Fellow, PhD in Political Science, has played a leading role in coordinating Latin American movements resisting corporate "Free Trade Agreements". Berron has a trade union background, he worked for a long time with the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas after working at the International Office of Central Única dos Trabalhadores - CUT (Unique Workers' Center), Brazil. Though Argentinian, he has been based in Brazil for many years. As TNI-er, he is one of the founders of the Dismatle Corporate Power Global Campaign that push for a binding treaty on TNCs and Human Rights at UN Level. He's now dedicated to tackle the problem of "privatization of democracy" by corporations and other economic powers.
Celia Alldridge spent 13 years in Brazil working with urban and rural social movements (including the MST - Landless Workers Movement), and for many years with the Brazilian and international feminist movement. She works at the International Secretariat of Friends of the Earth International and facilitates FoEI's 'gender justice & dismantling patriarchy' work, and is an activist of the World March of Women. She is a member of the Brazilian activist "Collective for democracy and against the coup d'Etat in Brazil" in The Netherlands.
