Matthew was transferred to UCSF (San Francisco) Medical Center late Saturday night. They have done multiple scans: x-ray, CT, and MRI to begin assessing his condition and what they can do at UCSF.

Matthew is up walking around on his own, which is so great to see. His left arm is held in a net sling to an IV pole, so getting around is quite slow and awkward, but he has a great attitude.

Sometime later today, Matthew will have his left arm wounds washed out, and the wound VAC replaced, which is a routine procedure that needs to be done every 2-5 days. In the past, they have put him under general anesthesia and he has experienced a lot of confusion and "loopiness" when he wakes up. Please pray that he will tolerate that wash out surgery well and quickly overcome the effects of anesthesia afterward.

Kind friends have offered to help pay for Pamala, Daniel, and Ariela to fly over from Croatia so that they can be here with Matthew for 9-10 days. We are currently looking into flight options. Please pray that those details would work out. I know it would mean a lot to Matthew to see his mom and younger siblings. Unfortunately, Kirsten is still in classes at BFA in Germany and unable to come, but we are seeing if we can arrange for her to come on her Spring Break, possibly.

Very kind people, whom we have never met, are letting Elizabeth and me stay in their beautiful, fully stocked apartment in Redwood City, CA, this week. This a fantastic provision of a free and relaxing place to live. God's people are amazingly kind and generous.

 The drawback is that, since parking at UCSF is so unbelievably expensive ($32/day), we are using public transit, which this morning took us 2 1/2 hours one way. I'm sure we'll get better this week as we get used to the Bay Area Rapid Transit system (BART).

On the 9th, Elizabeth will be returning to KC to start her new job and continue grad school. Her presence here has been amazingly helpful.

The plan is for Pamala, Daniel, and Ariela to arrive on the 8th and stay until the 17th or 18th. We are looking for housing for the four of us during that time. The challenge is that we are not sure whether Matthew will still be here at UCSF at that time, or whether he will be back at John Muir in Walnut Creek.

Even though the fund was started a couple weeks ago, it has been quite a logistical labyrinth to get a bank account set up and verified so we can receive those donations. We haven't been able to receive any of them yet, but the first transfer to us is scheduled for the 8th. Praise God for finally getting those details worked out.

On a lighter note, it was quite the experience being here in San Francisco while they lost to our team in the Super Bowl. Congratulations to the Chiefs!

So, here are some praises and prayer requests:

Praise that Matthew has been transferred to UCSF where there are nerve specialists who can evaluate his condition and suggest a treatment plan.

Praise God for the apartment for Elizabeth and me to stay in.

Praise God for the generous brother and sister in Christ who paid for use to keep the rental car until the 11th.

Pray for everything to come together for flights for Pamala, Daniel, and Ariela to come to CA to see Matthew.

Pray for housing for the four of us while they are visiting.

Pray for wisdom for me. I need to change my return tickets which are scheduled for the 11th, but I don't know yet what date I will be returning to Croatia.

Pray for today's surgery for the wound washout and wound VAC to go well with no complications.

Pray for the exploratory surgery at UCSF and that the doctors will know the best course of action to restore feeling and movement to Matthew's arm.

Pray for healing for Matthew's arm to be able to use it fully again and for the Lord's will whether that be supernatural healing, nerve grafting, and reimplantation, or amputation and prosthetics.

Pray for wisdom which hospital and eventual rehab center would be best for Matthew.

Pray for wisdom for Pamala and me as we consider the best timing to take our furlough in the US (which is scheduled for July 2020-January 2021).

Pray for the Bible translations into the 5 Roma languages to continue.

Pray for help and wisdom as I still need to manage the translations, including logistics of getting salaries to the translators and guiding their translation work.

Pray for wisdom whether to attempt our Bible translation consultant training workshop in May 2020.
