A few months back I received a voicemail from a friend of mine and it says, "Hey there, it's Patty. Give me a call, I did a thing." Gosh, my mind is reeling now, the tease was perfect! I quickly returned her call and she proceeds to tell me about a contest she entered from Tim Braun. I am familiar with Tim as Patty and her husband have gone to him for years. My first thought, is "oh my, what did she win this time?". She *always* wins these contests... it's been a running joke for years!
She told me it was a contest where she had to write a story about loss, but it couldn't be about her. Well, I was the subject and it was an amazing story of my journey and loss over the last few years.
The prize was a weekend at a luxury home in Palm Springs, CA! The pictures looked amazing and as it's a large house, I thought to invite Patty, my wife's two daughters, and their husbands. As time went on everyone couldn't work our their schedules and had to decline the invitation... life gets in the way sometimes! I did invite another friend of mine and he was able to come for the weekend.
I arrived Friday around noon and WOW, what a place! It was very "Palm Springs".... super hip and colorful and beautifully decorated. After getting a walk-through from the property manager and getting the keys, I surveyed the property a bit more. There's a large backyard with a pool, jacuzzi, firepit, seating area, and lots of vegetation.
My friend arrived a little bit after me and we went into town to get some lunch. The house is only a few blocks off the main street in downtown Palm Springs. It was so close to everything!
We came back to enjoy the house... sat by the fire pit and had a drink... it's very quiet and peaceful there. It gave me plenty of time to relax and reflect on the past 2 years. Between Covid and my wife's illness and passing, it's been a rough one, for sure.
The inside of the house is wonderful. We sat in the living room and caught up for a few hours, then headed back in town for dinner... afterward, we took in the jacuzzi. Delightful!
Saturday was spent with some friends who own a home in Palm Desert. I was glad we were able to see them and spend time catching up. We hadn't seen them for a while.
I had a prior commitment in Phoenix, where I live, on Sunday afternoon, so we left on Sunday morning, after enjoying our coffee in the backyard.
It was a wonderful time and I am forever grateful to Patty for entering me and for Tim for offering his place for the weekend. My only regret was my wife's girls couldn't enjoy the weekend too.
There's always next time! |
