A few months back I received a voicemail from a friend of mine and it says, "Hey there, it's Patty. Give me a call, I did a thing." Gosh, my mind is reeling now, the tease was perfect! I quickly returned her call and she proceeds to tell me about a contest she entered from Tim Braun. I am familiar with Tim as Patty and her husband have gone to him for years. My first thought, is "oh my, what did she win this time?". She *always* wins these contests... it's been a running joke for years!

She told me it was a contest where she had to write a story about loss, but it couldn't be about her. Well, I was the subject and it was an amazing story of my journey and loss over the last few years.

The prize was a weekend at a luxury home in Palm Springs, CA! The pictures looked amazing and as it's a large house, I thought to invite Patty, my wife's two daughters, and their husbands. As time went on everyone couldn't work our their schedules and had to decline the invitation... life gets in the way sometimes! I did invite another friend of mine and he was able to come for the weekend.

I arrived Friday around noon and WOW, what a place! It was very "Palm Springs".... super hip and colorful and beautifully decorated. After getting a walk-through from the property manager and getting the keys, I surveyed the property a bit more. There's a large backyard with a pool, jacuzzi, firepit, seating area, and lots of vegetation.

My friend arrived a little bit after me and we went into town to get some lunch. The house is only a few blocks off the main street in downtown Palm Springs. It was so close to everything!

We came back to enjoy the house... sat by the fire pit and had a drink... it's very quiet and peaceful there. It gave me plenty of time to relax and reflect on the past 2 years. Between Covid and my wife's illness and passing, it's been a rough one, for sure.

The inside of the house is wonderful. We sat in the living room and caught up for a few hours, then headed back in town for dinner... afterward, we took in the jacuzzi. Delightful!

Saturday was spent with some friends who own a home in Palm Desert. I was glad we were able to see them and spend time catching up. We hadn't seen them for a while.

I had a prior commitment in Phoenix, where I live, on Sunday afternoon, so we left on Sunday morning, after enjoying our coffee in the backyard.

It was a wonderful time and I am forever grateful to Patty for entering me and for Tim for offering his place for the weekend. My only regret was my wife's girls couldn't enjoy the weekend too.

There's always next time!

Hi Tim,

I am writing to nominate my friend, Rob, for your contest. Rob lost his beautiful wife, Pat, to Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer last month. Rob and Pat had a beautiful relationship/marriage. They were truly two people who “completed” one another. They found each other later in life, after each had been previously married. It was a match made in heaven! Pat was the most effervescent, fun, happy, funny woman! No one was a stranger to her and she was so thoughtful and kind to everyone she met. Wherever Pat was, the party was! She loved planning parties and always made them full of fun and really stupid contests and prizes! She also loved decorating for the holidays, bringing so much happiness to those celebrating with her. She brought joy and sunshine to Rob and was his everything. He is, of course, grieving her loss in the same big way that they loved one another.

Rob has, unfortunately, suffered more than Pat’s loss recently. Four years ago, Rob lost his best friend, my husband, to Glioblastoma Multiforme, as well. They had an incredible friendship that spanned almost 40 years. They sang together in an international champion barbershop quartet, traveled the world together performing, and were roommates for a time in their 20’s. They even worked for the same company for almost the entire time of their friendship. My husband’s loss was a terrible blow to Rob. Tim, you actually gave me a reading in which my husband spoke of Rob – his “brother who was not a brother,” you called him. For Pat then to be diagnosed with the same disease that took away his best friend was beyond devastating to Rob. He knew what the road ahead was for Pat, yet he cared for her in the most incredibly positive and hopeful way. Having walked in his shoes, I can say that Rob spent that last year of Pat’s life giving her the best and most loving care possible. It will take many, many months just for Rob to recover from the exhausting care he provided his dear Pat.

If you can believe this, Rob and Pat lost their beloved rescue Golden Retriever, Freddy, only two weeks after my husband died. Freddy, unbelievably, also died of brain cancer.

Rob has an incredible amount of healing ahead of him. Your generous offering of the weekend in Palm Springs can only bring him a much needed getaway to care for himself on every level – mind, body, and spirit. I hope you will consider choosing Rob as your contest winner.

Blessings, and much appreciation,

Patty
