MISE ERIÚ Singing old songs that give us a glimpse into Ireland’s ancient Gaelic past.Since the 13th century, Ireland has been renowned throughout Europe for her rich musical culture. Even her enemies acknowledged the “incomparable” musicianship of Irish harpers.
This love of music - and the oft remarked upon friendliness and hospitality of the Irish - stems from our ancient gaelic culture. Having never been colonised by the Roman Empire, our ancestors retained aspects of their ancient customs of law, governance and spirituality until well into the seventeenth century and beyond. This culture placed high esteem on merit, fairness and generosity. Men and women who brought value to their clan - through martial skill, art, craftsmanship or animal husbandry - achieved status in society.
Most of the music of this ancient culture was lost during the brutal subjugation of the Gaelic Irish in the 18th century, but some remnants remain.
Patrick seeks to evoke this almost mystical Gaelic past through singing songs (in both English and Irish) that were written by people who lived within this system, or the remnants of it. He sings these songs and explains their historical and cultural context so that the audience can get a real sense of the true spirit of this ancient land."
