From childhood, guys have been told to “be a man”, “man up” and “be strong”.
We confused little boys took this to mean that we needed to do everything on our own, never ask for help, and never show emotion.
Our idols became steely, intense characters like Bruce Lee, Batman, and James Bond.
We decided to become superheros and save the world by the use of our internal fortitude and the sweat of our own brow.
We turned away from help.
We turned away from love.
This is the narrative that many of the men in your life live by. We are stone cold killers. We are purpose driven machines. We are emotionless secret agents.
Except this isn’t true.
Inside, just past the focused gaze, we are little boys. We want to be touched. We want to be loved. We want you to come give us a hug and tell us how much you believe in us.
Your job is to break through.
As a woman, you are the torch to our ice cube. You are the supernova to our glacier. There is no door that you cannot unlock. There is no wall that you cannot completely obliterate.
Do not lose faith when he ignores you. Do not become bitter when he turns away.
Use your powers because you have many.
Help him feel, because he needs it.
Show him love that knows no bullshit shield.
Break through, break through, break through.
And you will never know a cold bed, an unsafe street, a lonely holiday.
He will be your superhero.
