Subject: ~What Mommy Whales Teach Their Young
Friend,
After we made it to Loreto, we drove southwest across the Baja
in hopes of seeing the whales in Magdalena Bay! It's on the
Pacific. And every year, the parents swim down from Alaska
to birth, mate and teach survival skills to their offspring.
We made it just in time to catch a boat to the island!
Our plan was to hitch a ride and camp a few miles out. We wanted to
sleep on the shore to hear the whales throughout the night, then wake
up early in hopes of smooth water and close encounters!
Imagine bright starts, ocean waves, whales singing and breathing and
nobody else for a hundred square miles or so!
The bay offers warm waters and is free from predators, which are
Orcas and humans. But, the locals on shore have been petting the whales
in their natural environment for decades, rather than hunting and
killing. It's a whale's paradise.
The moms teach the kids that this is a safe place...so that
someday when mom and dad are gone, baby will visit annually
for mating and safety.
Mom's lesson is pretty straightforward. When the boats head out to the bay,
she nudges baby to boat. She circles and keeps watch. Naturally, everyone
leans over the side to pet them. Baby gets excited and starts breathing
heavy. The little spouts spray everyone in the face.
We traveled a long way and were hoping for the same.
