I may no longer be one of Jimmy Buffett’s “parrot heads”, but I still

called for clear skies. But the weather changed as we started to descend.
Clouds shielded our runway. Shane called Air Traffic Control (ATC) to be
re-routed to Ontario.

As we circled down to get into the pattern, the Ontario runway also
vanished. Plan C in effect, he found a small strip just north. No tower,
no traffic and no clouds…it was Rialto, California.

Wind howling, a woman ran out from a small office to tie our bird down.
To our surprise, she introduced herself as Judy Scholl, the wife of
aviation hero Art Scholl.

Remember Top Gun?

Art was the ace stunt pilot, the real “Goose.”

He had undertaken thousands of daring aerobatic stunts for air shows,
movies and TV shows. But sadly, he plunged into the Pacific after failing
to recover from an inverted flat spin, while filming dramatic backdrop
scenes for the hot movie, Top Gun.

Judy was warm and welcoming to us. She admired our ship, a beautifully
restored, 1962 Mooney, and gave us a tour of some of her prized planes.
Her airport was clean, tidy and took us back to the 70’s when aviation
was at it’s peak.

She also showed us her project, a 1953 Beechcraft T-34. Cruising at a
swift 173 MPH, this was her chariot in the sky.

An excellent host, she spoke fondly of Art’s life and of her own,
expressing how much she missed him. Her emotion was fresh. It felt
like he left the day prior. Art's legacy is still alive and well in
aviation. But more importantly, she told us that he taught her to always
live the life of your dreams…and for that she was eternally grateful.
