My oldest daughter, Lily, is starting to look for a college. I'm pushing for
a big city. Looking back, her best education came from Los Angeles
Unified School District (LAUSD).

Sure, we could have found her a comfy, cozy school environment where

...They were already learning.

Without this experience, I suspect both of my kids would grow up to never
know cultural diversity and inequality. They'd surely become just as
complacent as the mediocre masses who ignore it and pay huge sums for
private schools they can't afford, with kids who have parents in the same
social and economic circle, the same color of skin, and the same number
of American Girl Dolls. 

So as a teen looking for a college, I'm pushing for a school that has
diversity...and chemistry.

I'm also urging her to take a gap year.

My first year of college doesn't seem like that long ago. After a year of
wrestling and trying to stay afloat in school, I moved to Phoenix for the
summer.

On the weekends, I worked for Atlas Van Lines packing a moving truck in
115 degree heat. During the week, I worked full time selling credit cards.

After 4 weeks, I was the top sales guy.

(It was a sleazy job. All debt is bad debt. And since that summer, I
swore it off forever.)

Despite selling more credit cards than the other 99 people on the sales
floor, I got fired. I broke script. And everyone hated it.

After being fired, it was Atlas Van Lines full time, until school started.
