New York Times, "Omega-3 Fats Increase Cancer Risk!"

As highlighted by the New York Times, "researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle examined the association between fatty acids in the blood and prostate cancer prevalence among participants in the Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial. Their analysis matched 1,658 participants ages 55 to 84 with 1,803 controls for comparison. Men with the highest blood DHA [omega-3 fats] levels were 2.5 times more likely to develop high-grade, aggressive prostate cancer than those with the lowest D.H.A. levels, the researchers found.

Studies that involve large groups and associations are known as epidemiolgical research. And rarely do they point to a cause, just an association. Plus, some design flaws existed within the study.

Over 50% of participants were overweight, and rarely exercised. Further, unreliable PSA scores were used as biomarkers in part of the study. Combined, these show that omega-3 fats may or may not have played a role, and that being overweight and skipping out on exercise could have simply exacerbated their condition, regardless of what fats they may have been taking or not...
