Hello!
Mark here from The Happy Pianist.
Happy CNY! 🍊🍊
We are in the midst of Chinese New Year celebrations, visiting the homes of our relatives and friends.
I remember when I was young, I love to visit homes and play with my cousins and friends, until...
my parents start to compare me with my cousins.
Compare about school, about grades, about music, and even compare height and weight.
Thinking back, I was quite embarrassed.
Now as a parent, I try not to give such pressure to my own child.
So this year, I tried something different, and it's even more fun!
On the 1st day of Chinese New Year, I visited my friend's home with my child. As usual, we enjoyed festive food and lively conversations—but this time, we did something different.
🎻🎹 We played music together!
My son plays the violin, and my friend’s child plays the piano. We found a simple sheet music arrangement of Dong Dong Qiang and decided to give it a go.

Though it’s a short CNY song, they ended up playing for a good 30 minutes - trying to stay in sync, helping each other with the notes and rhythm, and having fun along the way.
Later, the parents joined in, and soon, we were playing all sorts of songs!
Classical, English, Chinese, and even some trendy tunes we could think of. The house was filled with music, laughter, and pure joy. Looking back, isn’t this the best part of learning music?
Whether you play the piano, violin, guitar, cello, brass, woodwind, or even sing — the real joy comes from making music together and enjoying each other’s accompaniment…
Not from comparing grades or achievements.
With two more weeks of CNY celebrations ahead, I hope this gives you an idea for your next home visit!
