Subject: How to keep up a child’s interest in violin? 🎻

Hello!

Last week, a violin parent asked me a very similar question:

How do I keep my child interested in learning music?

Their kids are progressing well in violin, but they’re unsure if their children will stay motivated in the long run.

I took a day to reflect on this, and after sharing my thoughts, they found my suggestion really helpful. So, let me share it with you too!

Most people assume that music interest will come naturally - just sign a child up for lessons, and they will automatically love music.

Yes, some kids do develop a natural passion.

But not all kids are like that.

And here’s the good news:

Interest can be cultivated!

How?

Through exposure.

When a child learns violin, their idea of violin is often limited to their lessons with a teacher. But music is so much bigger than that!

The best way to help a child stay engaged is to expand their view of what music is beyond the classroom.

My favorite and most effective way?

✨ Expose them to live performances! ✨

There’s something magical about watching real musicians perform - feeling the energy, seeing their expressions, and hearing the music come to life.

Live performances show kids what’s possible with music. They inspire, excite, and create lasting memories that keep the passion alive.

And the best part?

Live music is everywhere! 🎶

🎹 Music concerts & student recitals
🎻 Orchestras performances in concert halls
🎤 Street performances at Orchard Road
🎼 Public pianos at MRT stations (yes, anyone can play!)

Watching these public performances inspires them to imagine themselves as the performer one day—playing confidently in front of an audience and receiving the applause.

Speaking about live performances, there's a FREE public concert by Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) at Gardens By The Bay, on 15th March, Saturday.

It's an open field where you can relax on a picnic mat, enjoy beautiful music, and soak in the atmosphere. A perfect outing for families, couples, and even pets!
