José Rosa and Self Transformation
José Alberto Rosa (May 15, 1940 – April 20, 1996) was born in Portugal to a middle class couple. His father was a tailor, his mother a teacher. José was a child prodigy; brilliant, precocious and spoiled. He was also stifled by the conservative culture of his country and his family, even as it allowed him to become highly educated and proficient at music and art. At 19 years of age, he escaped Portugal and sailed to Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. He entered medical school, graduated in three years, and began a career and life path that would eventually take him to the Holy Daime and to become the leader of the spiritual community of Céu da Montanha, in Mauá.
Along the way, José went from being an emergency room physician, to training as a classical psychiatrist, running a hospital for criminally insane prisoners, training as a psychotherapist, being a pioneer in the use of art and drama therapy, and introducing Bio-energetic therapy to Brasil. He also worked on himself with great dedication, making himself a model for the therapeutic path on which he was guiding others.
In 1980, José was intuitively guided to leave Brasil and go to New York, in order to study Bio-Energetics with its founder, Alexander Lowen. He followed the path as it opened to move to Boston in 1983, which is where I met him. I became his psychotherapy patient. He became my therapist, then later my teacher, my mentor, my professional partner and my best friend. In 1988, he took a group of his former therapy clients, including me, to Brasil. None of us knew what was in store for us.
At the end of 1988, José discovered that he had pancreatic cancer, and was very close to dying. He went, according to his guidance, to Mauá and received, as he was promised, his complete healing and curing. That occurred on February 14, 1989. The following September, José and I traveled to Mapiá, in the heart of the Amazon Forest, so that José could, per his spiritual orders, present himself to Padrinho Sebastião and begin his mission in the Daime. I thought I was going along for the ride and to support him.
When Alex Polari and Sonia were called by Padrinho Sebastião to come join him in Mapiá, José, much to his consternation, became the leader of the community of Céu da Montanha, where he had been healed. He held that position for three years, until his death. Along the way, he brought Jane, me, and many of the original Daimistas in the United States into the spiritual life. He taught us the rudiments of the Daime path, encouraging us to follow the teachings and rituals as they were practiced in Brasil. And he taught us to access and follow our intuition. When we officially formed the Church of the Holy Light of the Queen in October 1996, José Alberto Rosa was selected to be the patron of our church, continuing his guidance and teaching from the spiritual plane.
José was an extraordinary person. He was a brilliant therapist, healer and teacher. More than that, though, he demonstrated by his own ruthless pursuit of his own healing and awakening, and by the courage that he stimulated and demanded in those of us who were his clients, friends and disciples, that deep self-transformation is not only possible, but is a path that leads to health, strength, and following your destiny through grounded, discerned relationship with one’s guides and deeper self. By his healing from cancer, which required his total surrender and dedication to his spiritual life and obedience to Divine will, he left us a blueprint for healing and self-transformation.
José also left us the original Daime healing work that has in recent years become the Daime Self Transformation Work (STW). His partner in that original work, before I joined the crew, was Baixinha, a queen of healers and mediums in Brasil. In 2001, José contacted Baixinha from where he is now, and the resulting collaboration has evolved into the STWs that we conducted with Baixinha until her passing in 2014, and since with our crew of her students and heirs. Those works are powerful and beautiful, conducted as José and Baixinha taught us: through intuition, dedication to the good of all, and a willingness to follow the spiritual guides wherever they take us, with our feet on the ground.
We conduct the STWs in many places. And every February in Ashland, Oregon, where José lived with my family and taught us the ways of profound healing and of the Daime, and where the temple that we built for Baixinha to come and do the work that José left us is located, we conduct a very special program of spiritual works. We invoke the presence of José and Baixinha and their (and our) guides in the house they built, the House of White Eagle. The resulting joining of so many spiritual forces is STWs of a very special nature. The beneficiaries of this invocation and healing work are the people who come to join us.
You are hereby invited to be among them.
In Light,
Jonathan Goldman
