My Dearest Brothers and Sisters,
I am writing today
to ask for your help. This is a moment when the pull to insularity is
strong. Kindness and charity are more necessary for our spiritual and
emotional and societal health than ever. And, of course, the need is
great.
I am creating a fund through CHLQ to
support people and communities in Brazil, at this time in Lumiar and in
Mauá. We have a long history of heart-centered relations with these
particular communities. Our teachers and mentors, José Rosa and
Baixinha, left us their legacies of healing work and the strong bonds we
formed with their people. We have dear friends living in
these communities that are in lockdown that need help with day-to-day
living expenses - to buy food, to buy a mask, to get to a doctor, to
take care of what needs to be done. I am in touch with people in
these communities who can point me to who is in need and what community
projects need help that will help the entire community. I also want
this fund to help the Mapiá Health Project of Santa Casa.
We
know that the Covid virus has had, is having, and will continue to have
a huge effect on our planet. People are suffering everywhere. The
people who bear the brunt of that suffering are usually those who have
little to no backup to rely on when times are hard. And the end of these
hard times - this passage of reflection, cleansing, and adjustment - is
not in sight.
We
can all practice the small acts that spread kindness and tenderness
rather than joining in the fear, criticism, and judgement. We can pray
for light to descend on earth. We can be calm in the face of confusion,
we can replace fear with faith, we can practice compassion. And for
those of us who have financial means we can help in that most material,
practical manner.
Brazil has been hard hit by
the virus. The already almost non-existent safety net has been further
dismantled by the shockingly inefficient and cruel Bolsonaro
government. Many people are suffering. The public health system was
inept in normal times and is even less prepared in this time of the
pandemic.
I am asking those who can to send whatever you can to CHLQ earmarked: Brazil Assistance.
