Fresh Hop Crop Arrivals

Simcoe, Idaho 7, Hallertau, Moutere, Dr Rudi, Chinook, Nugget, Willamette

As part of our Hop Freshness Program, this email is intended to alert you when the new crop of each type of hop arrives at our warehouse. Today, we are announcing the recent arrival of the following 2021 hop crops!

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of tropical fruit, citrus, pine, and grass/hay.

About Moutere

This is the first arrival of Moutere at our Fermenter's Warehouse. Moutere is a New Zealand-bred hop that was developed at New Zealand's Plant and Food Research, and released in 2015. The aromatic oil content is moderately high with characteristics of intense fruit with elements of grapefruit, light tropical fruit and passionfruit, citrus and resinous pine. Moutere also delivers very high alpha acid content with low cohumulone, making for high bittering potential with low potential for astringency. This is a true dual purpose hop that will be excellent for both bittering and aromatic use.

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of pine, citrus and earth & grass.

About Dr. Rudi

Dr. Rudi, of New Zealand, was initially called Super Alpha upon its release by HortResearch in 1976. In 2012, this variety was renamed Dr. Rudi in honor of the “father of New Zealand hops.” It is high in cohumulone content, therefore we do not recommend using it for bittering. It's aromatic potential is very unique and was selected in blind smelling by many of our customers for release at our shop. The pine character is resinous and similar to pine sap and lemongrass, while the citrus element can be similar to lime pith. High rates of dry hop use may result in intensely resinous hop flavors, so you may consider blending with other hops if you do not want high pine intensity.

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of citrus, pine, grass & earth and herbs.

About Simcoe

Simcoe is a hop variety that quickly found its way into the hearts of bitter-loving craft brewers. Intense pine aroma adds to the fresh, youthful vigor. Dual purpose for use as a bittering hop or powerful aromatic hop. It is famous for commercial use in Russian River Row 2 Hill 56 and Pliny The Elder, and well as Knee Deep's Simtra and innumerable others.

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of tropical fruit, pine and stone fruit.

About Idaho 7

Idaho 7 was first released in 2015 and saw immediate popularity with commercial brewers who loved it for its Mosaic-esque complexity. Idaho 7 bridges the gap between new wave tropical fruit aromas and the classic American citrus and pine of California IPAs.

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of herbs, spices and flowers.

About Hallertau Mittelfruh

Hallertau Mittelfuh is one of the classic "noble aroma hops" with ever-so-subtle flower and spice fragrances defining its uber alles superiority. It is named for its origins in the Hallertauer region of Germany. It has very low bittering value. The prototypical German hop known for its delicacy and high quality.

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of pine, citrus, herbs and spices.

About Chinook

Chinook has been with us since the early days of the craft beer movement in the US. Released in 1985 through the USDA breeding program, Chinook remains an essential hop in the industry, beloved for its strong, mountain pine aroma. While we do not recommend it as a bittering hop due to the potential for astringency, this is a go-to hop for pine-y freshness along with citrus elements of grapefruit and other aromas reminiscent of herbs and spices.

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of herbs, pine, citrus and flowers.

About Nugget

Nugget has a strong herbal and slightly spicy aroma with high bittering value and low potential for astringency, which has brought this hop variety to the forefront of the industry as a bittering hop with interesting aromatic applications.

Aromatic Characteristics

Aromas of herbs, pine, citrus and flowers.

About Willamette

Bred from UK Fuggle hops, its modest bittering value and the joyous harmony of flowers, fruit, earth and spice makes Willamette a great aromatic addition to many styles of beer.
