Tennessee is facing an opportunity to change the law with respect to the ability of lawful Citizens to wear handguns without seeking the permission of government to do so. Previous Administrations were not in favor of returning the Right to wear arms to the people at large, in fact they were vocally opposed as well as using the power of their office to defeat any attempt to achieve a return to the Rights intended by our Founders. Governor Lee has publicly stated his desire to change that. There are legislators who are working against the Establishment, the Sheriff’s Association, the Chiefs of Police, Moms Demand Action and liberal city and county governments across the State who oppose this movement. We, as the TFA can have a voice in how this is structured if we will actively work to support those legislators that are our help against the many obstacles that exist to kill this, as has happened time and time again.
In any legislation, there will be give and take if we are not intractable and willing to allow the legislators who would be our friends to allow us to voice constructive concerns, rather than being accusatory and ungrateful for the chance, number one, and that resulting in removing the ability to be a stakeholder by stating only negatives secondarily. Constructive reasoned conversations can be had, resulting in amendments that can better the bill, if we approach that moment correctly. Having that chance to be consulted with is what we would desire, and once afforded, should be appreciated.
Governor Lee and the legislators trying to achieve Constitutional Carry are facing huge problems within our society to make this happen. We as the TFA are grateful for the fighting chance we have to achieve it. It took a century to move from no ability to legally wear our handguns in Tennessee, from the institution of the Handgun Carry permit to this juncture in less than a quarter of that is progress of major proportions.
We look forward to, and are thankful for this chance to witness a major change in the law related to wearing arms in Tennessee, one that would place us among the few States honoring their Citizens true Constitutional Rights.
