Legislative committee assignments are important information because pending legislation is often made or more commonly defeated in these committees and subcommittees. Indeed, for any legislation that is defeated in a subcommittee or committee the simple fact is that most Tennessean’s have no voice in that legislation unless their legislators are assigned to those committees. Now, that is not always true because some legislators realize that as a committee member their “constituents” are all Tennesseans and not just those in their district – but that is not always the case.
The composition of committees says a lot about the attitude of the legislative leadership toward the upcoming session and the topics that will be addressed.

House Committee Assignments.
First, there is no longer a House Judiciary. It has been apparently separated into 2 full committees – Civil and Criminal. Although 2nd Amendment legislation might go to either, historically when these two were subcommittees the 2nd Amendment bills usually went to the criminal subcommittee since the statutes which are involved are mainly set forth in the existing Tennessee Code in the sections that contain the criminal laws.
