Tennessee has had a civilian handgun permit since May 1994. Tennessee’s
original civilian handgun permit was renamed in 2019 as the “enhanced”
permit. Nothing was enhanced or improved, it was just a new name. At
present,
thirty-six (36) states honor the Tennessee “enhanced” permit.
After rejecting efforts for several years to enact constitutional carry as 17 other states have already done, Tennessee enacted instead a second type of permit with reduced characteristics and benefits - the new "concealed only" permit.
It was unneeded, unnecessary, poorly written and, frankly, a mistake. It went into effect on January 1, 2020.
Now, as other states are looking at the uniquely stupid situation in Tennessee, at least one state has already said that it will not honor the new "concealed only" permit from Tennessee. It is possible other states will reach a similar conclusion.
