We made a big change in the way we trade options this summer, and the results have been extremely encouraging. For our 5 stock-based portfolios (soon to be 6 when we set up JNJ), the average gains were 14.1% for October, more than double the gains made by the stocks themselves. The big change is to be short weekly calls in each of 4 weekly series so that some calls expire each Friday (as opposed to our former tactic of selling only monthly calls). This allows us to tweak the risk file every week rather than making a dramatic adjustment when the stock has moved too far in either direction. As you may recall, many of these adjustments ended up badly when the stock reversed itself. Tweaking once every week seems to solve the adjustment problems that have often plagued us in the past.
