Dear Friend,

Wow, 2018 is about to end and 2019 is about to begin. I tend to do a back track look through the soon to end year to see if I accomplished what I wanted to accomplish and to examine the areas of my life where I’ve grown; intentionally and unintentionally. The hardships have been, at times, more informative than the deliberate experiences.

2018 did not begin well for me (transparency); I was being sued by one of my brothers over some property that he and I inherited. It’s a long story so I won’t go into too many details…but I will tell you that it was very painful emotionally for me. To make a long story short, I PRAYED. I had to travel a long distance twice, once (going and returning) through a nor’easter snow storm driving! If I did not show up for the court hearing, I would automatically lose the case. I arrived the night before and stayed in a motel. The next morning, one hour before the court hearing, I received a call that the court was closed due to the coming snow storm. I had driven twelve hours to get there and now, I had to drive twelve hours back home because the intensity of the storm was expected to get worsen, I didn’t want to get snowed in.

What made matters worse, I had requested the hearing be postponed due to the anticipated snow storm but the court said no. Now, they were apologetic but that didn’t help me. They postponed the hearing for later in the year which meant I had to take the trip again, this time there was no expected snow storms, so I was able to fly in and rent a car. I stayed at the same motel. The next morning, I arrived early to the court for the hearing.

This situation with my brother began soon after my mother’s death. This was the latest of the legal battles. Months earlier while in prayer, the Lord told me to call my brother and ask for forgiveness, which I thought was strange considering that I had done nothing wrong! But, I was obedient and phoned my brother. I told him what the Lord said to me and I asked him to forgive me. He said yes, and quickly went right back into his usual unpleasant diatribe, so I quickly ended the conversation and didn’t think about it anymore.

At the court hearing, I came face to face with my brother and his lawyer; I was alone except for the presence of God. The arbitrator began to pore over the documents and to ask each of us questions. We answered. At the end of the arbitration, I was ordered to pay my brother a hefty amount of money, which seemed so unfair to me given the fact that my brother lives rent free on a property where I am the majority owner and all I ask is that he pay the taxes. But, the law is the law, fair or not, because I am the majority owner, I am responsible for most of the taxes and he wanted to be reimbursed.

I left the hearing looking for a real estate agent and the quickest way to sell the property but before leaving the state and returning home, I stopped by my mother’s church to visit with the Bishop. I shared my heart with Bishop and I left there feeling better but still lost, I visited the property too. I had mixed feelings about selling a family property but all of my previous suggestions to my brother had fallen on deaf ears. Now, I had to pay him for the taxes that he had paid.

I’m sharing this with you because I want you to know how God works. Sometimes, it’s just not the way that we anticipate. I returned home and several months went by, I was waiting for an invoice from the court. One day, I received what I thought was the invoice for my payment but instead, it was a letter informing the parties that since the attorney had not filed the required paperwork for the payment of the judgement, the case was dismissed!

My brother’s attorney had mistakenly not filed the paperwork after the judgment and the case was dismissed. My brother’s attorney tried to re-open the case after the fact but by then my brother realized (after the real estate agents visit), that he had no place to go. If he moved, he would have to pay rent!!! His conversation took on a different tone. He told his attorney to not re-open the case. I began to see the Hand of God!

Since then, my brother has begun to attend the church that my mother attended before she moved to live with me. My brother and I have had a couple of good conversations and yesterday, he accepted the Lord and was baptized! If you knew my brother, you’d realize how much of a miracle this is.

I realize now that all those months ago, when God asked me to call my brother and ask him to forgive me, that God was softening his heart which would allow him to see past the hurt that he felt for not being a better son. I had to get pass “me” to ask for forgiveness when I felt that I had done nothing wrong, I had to be obedient and do what God asked me to do. There were so many financial and time complications for me related to the travel to and from the location but in the end; I did not have to pay the ridiculous amount of the judgment for the property taxes due to the attorney’s error. And, my brother and my relationship is now healed. What the enemy meant for evil God worked out for both of our good!!

This was just one of the things that impacted me in 2018. I’m anticipating that God will continue to do the miraculous in 2019.
