Preserving Your Slopers

You have worked hard at drafting your sloper or even created

a pattern that you love and you know you will use it over and over again.

There are a few ways to keep your slopers and patterns user-friendly and preserve your hard work.

A simple way to preserve your slopers is to apply a fine fusible interfacing to the back of them. Use the lowest amount of heat required and no steam. You can even do this to your favorite commercial patterns if you want to reduce that tissue paper feel. Depending on the interfacing you choose you may find that you have even added a little bit of a desirable draping to your pattern.

You can store your slopers & patterns in an oversized pattern envelope that is specially designed for sewing patterns and for archival purposes. This means less folding of your patterns, and they can be stored vertically on a shelf to create an organized collection of your work. Our pattern envelopes have a gusseted side seam, so they expand beautifully to accommodate your sloper & garment designs.

In many design houses the slopers are punched out of card stock type paper without seam allowances and stored on pattern hooks from a hole punched in the upper center. The slopers are traced onto the fabric with tailor's chalk and then seam allowances are added. Pattern hooks can help to keep pattern pieces together and organized during garment construction. Your slopers can hang off a rod in the closet for long term storage.

While everyone has their own style and storage hacks, I hope this article helped you with some easy ways to extend the longevity of your slopers, your personally designed patterns and commercial patterns. I have seen some of the projects you are working on and I can't wait to see the completed garments. I am inspired by your ideas and creativity! ❤

The upcoming newsletter will cover some tips on correcting those crazy twisted legs that happen while pattern drafting.
