Subject: The barbell…the new kid on the block

Bodyweight exercise has always been part of the history of physical training. The dumbbell can be traced back to ancient Greece, and the kettlebell has a long history (first appearing in the Russian dictionary in 1704 but being used long before that). However, the barbell is the “new kid on the block,” only appearing in the 1860s.

Originally appearing as a bar with fixed globes at the ends, the barbell has evolved to the seven-foot, rotating sleeves implement we are familiar with today.

The image of someone performing a bench press, squat, or deadlift might be synonymous with weight training now, but those are recent developments. Just as we went from the Wright brothers’ first flight to landing on the moon in about 66 years, the barbell has opened different pathways in physical training in three main ways.

  1. Maximum strength

  2. Hypertrophy

  3. Competition

There are difficult bodyweight skills and very heavy dumbbells and kettlebells, but nothing touches the barbell for maximum strength. The combination of load and volume can create hypertrophy like no other tool. The barbell also helped to create the sports of Powerlifting and Olympic Weightlifting.

The new barbell

Suffice it to say that the advent of the barbell ushered in new eras in physical training, and the progression of how to most effectively coach and use this “new kid on the block” continues.
