“Nothing will stop us from pursuing our mission of making the world a stronger place.”
By Jon Engum, StrongFirst Certified Master Instructor

In daylight, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a large expanse of wilderness nestled up to the beautiful and mysterious waters of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee. Thick woods, waterfalls, hiking trails, pines perched on cliffs, and secluded sandy beaches scattered with driftwood.
It was getting dark as I was driving on Highway 2. Out of the corner of my eye, I kept catching a glimpse, of a large dark being. It was then when I realized that I was entering a different realm…
My decision to self-quarantine was an easy one. It was the only way I could fulfill my commitment to teach the StrongFirst SFG II cert in New York. My home state of Minnesota was on the “New York Naughty List” and I was forbidden to enter without a 14-day quarantine. So, I packed my camper and left for the Michigan Upper Peninsula, the stomping grounds of the ultimate strongman, Sasquatch, and his north woods monster buddies the Windigo and the Mishibijiw!
Each day I was able to locate wi-fi, do some office work, and then head out on the trails to explore and, who knows, maybe meet some of these legendary figures. Much to my dismay, I wasn’t able to find either Sasquatch or a Windigo but I wasn’t giving up easily. I attempted a swim in Lake Superior a few times and saw no signs of the Mishibijiw, but I did encounter a mermaid. When I visited nearby towns, locals told me that they had no doubt about the existence of these “mythical” creatures.
…When I was leaving the Ironwood area in the daylight, Highway 2 was a different experience than driving through the towns and villages at night. I noted many Sasquatch silhouettes randomly placed along my way. The next thing I knew, I was happy and relieved to have made it to New York City and was busy preparing for the kettlebell cert at Five Points Academy in Manhattan.
My mind wandered to a statement by StrongFirst Certified Master Instructor Fabio Zonin: “Nothing will stop us from pursuing our mission of making the world a stronger place.”
