EXHALE TO ENDURE
Have you watched the cartoon in which a superhero was crossing the river walking on the bottom and breathing through a super long snorkel? In real life this character would not have gotten very far. He would have ended up rebreathing the same air trapped in the tube—called the dead space—over and over.
Even without a snorkel, some air gets stuck in our lungs and does not participate in gas exchange. No big deal when you are sitting and reading this but a problem when you are running or snatching hard. This is why Russian sports scientists teach athletes to focus on the exhalation, rather than the inhalation.
A cool experiment was conducted. Two groups of beginner women runners were tested on the 800m distance. A week later they were retested. The control group who did not receive any coaching on how to breathe improved their times by 3sec. The experimental group that was instructed to focus on a deep active exhalation for the duration of the distance improved their time by 13.5sec.
Prioritizing the exhalation will allow you to clear more carbon dioxide and to bring more oxygen in. Exhale to endure.
Pavel is teaching the Second Wind Express and Fabio is teaching Built Strong.
Built Strong adapts the Soviet Olympic weightlifting team’s muscle hypertrophy training method to the needs of other athletes. The unique method flies in the face of both the gym bros and the hypertrophy researchers.
