Prof. Mikhail Starov, a scientist and a powerlifting champion, designed this squat cycle for experienced lifters coming off a hard and high volume training cycle such as the “Russian Squat Routine.”

While at StrongFirst we generally do not employ such high reps in “grinds,” here we make an exception due to the conservative rep choices for the given weights and volume.

Follow up the squats with a walkout and a 10sec hold with a supramaximal weight (in a power rack, naturally).

Wrap up with hypertrophy work, e.g., calf raises for 15/3 (reps/sets).

On the light day later in the week do the following:
  1. Pause squat—50-60% x 4/4
  2. Squat with a 10sec negative and an explosive positive—50-60% x 3/3
  3. Hypertrophy work
On the heavy day push the assistance exercises to RM; on the light day do the same exercises but stop after reaching light fatigue.

Skip the light day on week 8, before maxing.

Reload: Your barbell strength blueprint
At StrongFirst we enjoy the challenge of polishing the chrome of classic methods. We stand by “cycling” as one of the best ways to build barbell strength. We also recognize that even timeless methods benefit from periodic updates.

While cycling works great for many, it can fail others by imposing a cookie cutter progression rhythm. To tackle this problem, Fabio and Pavel developed a series of straightforward tests and instructions that will enable you to build a power cycle just for you. While at it, we kept the original system’s spirit and simplicity. We tested and retested Reload. It delivered over and over.

Classic cycling has a tremendous legacy and it is with the greatest respect and humility that we have attempted to improve it.

In The Pleasure of Finding Things Out, the great scientist Richard Feynman wrote: “Each generation that discovers something from its experience must pass that on, but it must pass that on with a delicate balance of respect and disrespect, so that the race does not inflict its errors too rigidly on its youth, but it does pass on the accumulated wisdom… It is necessary to teach both to accept and to reject the past with a kind of balance that takes considerable skill...”
