In its ancient context, Misogi was not merely a physical act but a profound spiritual endeavor. Imagine standing beneath a thundering waterfall, icy water battering your body, testing your willpower, and demanding every ounce of resilience you have. The physical discomfort and mental struggle are not the true adversaries; they’re tools to strip away superficial fears and doubts, leaving behind clarity, strength, and a sense of purpose. For practitioners, Misogi represents the ultimate union of body, mind, and spirit in pursuit of transformation.
In modern interpretations, the term Misogi has evolved to encompass deliberate, challenging experiences designed to push individuals beyond their perceived limits. However, the essence remains unchanged: enrichment and revitalization through challenge. A Misogi could involve completing a grueling physical feat, overcoming a fear, or dedicating oneself to a goal so ambitious that failure seems almost certain. The point of Misogi isn’t guaranteed success—it’s about committing to the process and emerging stronger, wiser, and more resilient on the other side.

Additional note from Brett Jones, StrongFirst Director of Education
Embrace the challenge, find your Misogi, AND give yourself time to prepare and train up to the chosen goal. The certification standards are not to be taken lightly. A very fit and experienced trainee will likely spend 3 to 6 months preparing for each of the certifications. I recommend at least 6 months to as long as needed to prepare for your certification. The journey and the challenge are the goal; you need to stay healthy to get all the benefits. Your planning is part of the challenge, as is adapting to the changes.
