Fittingly, today’s training tip comes from the sport of Olympic style weightlifting—but will benefit anyone who back squats with a barbell or goblet squats with a kettlebell. |
|
1) From the bottom of a squat, stand up slowly until you are halfway up.
2) Then explode and go up on your toes.

Soviet era lifter Boris Severov explains how this benefits weightlifters: a slow start develops strength for standing up after a heavy clean and an explosive finish powers up the jerk.
The value to non-lifters is greater strength—classic Soviet experiments taught us that varying the lifting speed accelerates the gains.
