Subject: Are you a student?

Are you a student?

Please take a moment to reflect on that question and what being a student might mean to you.

At StrongFirst, our Certified Instructors do not have clients. They have students.

Students are there to be coached and there to learn. You can “workout” anywhere with anyone but are you a student?

In music and martial arts, students are those practicing with instructors. These pursuits, where learning and drilling fundamental skills are key to success, do not have “clients.” They have students.

That is the mindset within StrongFirst. To coach students, not “work with clients.”

So, are you a student?

This question begs a second question: Do you have a coach?

Anna Cannington, StrongFirst Certified Team Leader, recently asked this question on the StrongFirst Forum.

I often see someone post here on the forum who has an issue of some sort with their kettlebell, barbell, or bodyweight training. The question is asked, “Could it be your technique?” The answer “I’ve had my form checked by an SFG.” Often, this occurred once, many years ago. Or perhaps you had a form check and some feedback here on the forum.

These are both great! But... do you think you are good forever, then?

…I would suggest that having your form checked once, or even once in a while, is leaving a lot on the table. As your strength improves, your technique changes, and you add new movements—there is a lot to be seen, improved, and corrected. Have you considered ongoing coaching from an SFG or other StrongFirst certified instructor?

Even though Anna is a coach, she is also a student receiving ongoing coaching and technique work with a Weightlifting coach.

As John Wooden said: “If I am through learning, I am through.” Anna is not through.

Are you a student?

If so our StrongFirst Certified Instructors are ready to help you live or online.
