We ask ourselves questions all the time. Why are we here? Why does the universe exist, and how did that sock disappear in the washer? And one question from the late Louie Simmons can change your deadlift.
Where do you feel the weight at the start of your deadlift?
Now, before you roll your eyes, think about the question and answer it this way:
“Do you feel the weight more in your feet, more in your hands, or equally loaded between the two?”
If you feel the weight more in the feet, you may have squatted down too low or have yourself too far in front of the bar.
If you feel the weight more in the hands, your hips will likely shoot up first as you start the deadlift and you may jerk or pull the bar with your arms.
If you feel the weight equally between the feet and hands, you have wedged yourself into the start of the deadlift and can take the slack out of the bar.
Once you are equally loaded between the hands and feet and the slack is out of the bar, we want to implement a Chuck Norris visualization.
Chuck Norris doesn’t do pushups. He does earth downs.
So, once you have reached the point described above and begin to drive with your legs, visualize that you are doing an earth down and shoving the ground away.
