I thought I was doing everything "right."
Eva was just 4 years old, with white blond hair and an amazing focus for her age.
I gave her a little violin with a dinosaur puppet attached to the scroll. She wore a fairy dress to feel comfortable.
I knelt down next to her to make sure we were on the same level. Sounds perfect, right?
B. U. T...
Even with all these touches, there was no joy in this lesson when I watched a clip of my teaching from 8 years ago.
It hit me hard.
I thought I was doing everything right, but without joy, it was pretty meaningless. Harsh? Maybe. Fair? Definitely.
So what was missing? Why wasn’t there joy?
PEDAGOGY.
I focussed on violin pedagogy, sure, but I wasn’t thinking about early childhood pedagogy. Everything in the clip was adult-led. I had a serious demeanor and a bossy voice.
(I thought I was just being a teacher, but teachers don’t need to sound like that when the child is already doing brilliantly.)
Wendy asked me, "What would you do differently?"
My answer?
I’d change my tone of voice. I’d tell stories about the strings, let the children create their own stories, improvise, pluck, explore sounds, characters, expressions—anything to make it more interactive, so it’s not just me giving instructions.
Engage their imagination. Make it a journey of discovery!
This way of teaching isn’t obvious.
I wasn’t taught like this. My teachers weren’t taught like this.
So I simplified the concept into a mini-course, breaking it down into bite-sized chunks.
This course normally sells for $129 in my Stringosaurus online store. But it's available as part of the annual subscription to the Stringosaurus Hub! Incredible value.
For this week only, I’m offering it to you for just $29. I really want to inspire this generation of teachers—YOU—to explore this new approach to teaching.
It will completely change how you teach younger students!
