How a wild violin skit with 5-year-olds and an unexpected audience made my day

Hello Friend,

I’m still chuckling to myself over this, so of course, I had to share…

Yesterday, my Pre Primary violin class had a performance of the biggest hit from the Stringosaurus Hub: Rumble in the Jungle.

Mrs L-J, our amazing primary music specialist, and I tag-team this class to teach early childhood string skills and nurture their love of music.

To prepare for the big show, we decided on a little role-reversal: we’d act as the kids, and they’d be our parents in the audience!

So, we told our littlies that they’d get to see us play Rumble in the Jungle twice—once where we’re at our best and once… not so much.

Before starting, we brainstormed with them what makes a good performance—starting and stopping together, staying on the same string, all the essentials.

Then, with our parental audience watching intently, we did our “best version.” They clapped, we bowed, and we all discussed what they thought went well.

Then came the fun part—our silly version (this is where things took a turn). Tess and I kicked it off by plucking random strings, and then Tess grabbed her bow and started jabbing at her violin like a crazed fiddler.

I thought, why not go full chaos?, so I started unwinding my pegs, yelling, “My strings are all wrong!”

Then Mrs L-J poked me with her bow, which I of course took as my cue to dramatically topple over, feet flailing in the air as I threw a full-blown tantrum.

The kids were howling!

But right at my peak moment—legs in the air, shouting something about my “broken strings”—a parent poked their head in to collect their child.

Let’s just say it’s not easy to explain the finer points of string pedagogy while lying on your back in mock defeat. Luckily, she saw the humour… or at least I hope she did!

I hope this gave you a chuckle too! I’d love to hear any hilarious little moments from your own classes.

It’s good to share the “crazy” sometimes, right?

And if you’re looking to bring some Christmas Ease to your holiday teaching, the Stringosaurus Hub has an entire Christmas section for beginner violinists to keep your lessons festive and fun, but without leaving you completely exhausted. 🎄

Love,
Laura xx
