Hi Friend,

Here is a recap of this week's call. Our Q & A topic was "Motivating Your Sales Team."

This is a topic that comes up on a regular basis, so we talked about it from several different angles, and shared a few reminders and tips.

Some of the common things asked are:
  • How do I increase performance?
  • How do I get back lost drive?
  • How do I relieve the overwhelm?
There are many best practices, but motivation is certainly not a one size fits all.

One of the keys to determining the best course of action is a diagnostic check (looking for symptoms) and a tune up. Just like a car, you don't tune up once and forget about it... it's an ongoing process that needs regular maintenance.

An important point of differentiation is the contrast between motivation and inspiration.

Do you want to light a fire underneath someone,
or help them ignite the fire within?

Ongoing training and a motivational environment are tools you can adopt and adjust to achieve the right mix of leadership and development. Make sure your messaging aligns with your objectives.

Are you or your team stuck in habits or the same way of doing things even though things have changed in the product or the way your company does business? You must be willing to invest the time to develop effective two-way communication, cross-pollinate by learning from fellow teams in the space, and think of your team as an orchestra with you as the conductor. Bring out the best in people when they get off track.

I shared two great books.
The Ideal Team Player, https://www.tablegroup.com/books/ideal-team-player

In his classic, best-selling book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, Patrick Lencioni laid out a groundbreaking new approach for attacking the dangerous group behaviors that destroy teamwork. Here, he turns his focus to the individual member of a team, revealing the three indispensable virtues that make some people better team players than others.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team has become the world’s most definitive source on practical information for building teams. The book’s impact extends beyond business schools, churches, non-profit organizations, professional sports teams and the military.
