Subject: Getting Started with Cucumbers

Hi Friend.

We are officially in the heart of the growing season.  If you have already started to plant from seed, you will likely notice some vegetables starting to sprout. This is where the fun starts :)

Since nearly every childcare center expressed interest in growing cucumbers, this week we'll share everything you need to get started along with timeline photos.
Tip 1:  Growing cucumbers from seed.
If you're growing cucumbers from seed, you'll notice that they begin to sprout in as little as 5 days.  The cucumbers can be planted in small seed pots or directly in their big container or garden bed spot at this point in the season.  Here are a few snapshot of their first 3 weeks of life :)

Tip 2:  Facts about Cucumber

Cucumbers grow from seed to harvest in about 7-9 weeks.

Cucumbers are 90-95% water, which make them an excellent vegetable for our children.  That also means they will need lots of water throughout the growing process.  Like squash and zucchini, cucumber plants produce both male and female flowers and need pollination to produce its fruit.  In a few weeks we will show you the next stage in your cucumber's growing cycle and talk more about pollination.

Cucumbers can grow without a trellis and can just vine on the ground.  If however, you can trellis them it will help to protect the cucumbers from potential ground rot. A trellis could be used around 5 weeks into the growing process.
Tip 3:  Lesson for kids at this stage in your garden:

This is a great time to have your children create labels for your garden.  The Grow It, Try It, Like It! book has a companion lesson for creating Row Markers in your garden (page 33).  Here are some other ideas to create fun vegetable markers.
We hope you find these tips and lessons helpful.  Please reach out to us anytime with your questions.  We're happy to help.  And if you want to start your cucumber in containers, be sure to check out the online technology to help you strategize which containers work best for this plant.

We'll be back in touch with more information next week.

Have a great week.
