| Dear Friend,
In our previous newsletter, I announced that I will be moving on from Staf. Today I am delighted to be sharing with you the appointment of my successor, Jo Derrick, who was selected through a recruitment process involving frontline workers, care-experienced young people, and Staf Board members.
Jo will be taking up the post on 1st October 2019 and will be responsible for providing senior leadership, direction and oversight of the organisation in accordance with our core values: We Listen, We Care, We Love.
I have great confidence that the organisation will continue to flourish with Jo at the helm, and look forward to seeing Jo drive Staf forwards as we transition to a new chapter. You can read more about the appointment in our e-news below, including thoughts from Jo and I.
As promised, I am certainly not slowing down before I pass on the baton: we have a wide range of events planned over the Autumn, a podcast with the Deputy First Minister John Swinney scheduled for later this month, and a new job opportunity here at Staf – all of which you can find further details on below.
I look forward to catching up with many of you before my departure from Staf in late September, and hope you will join me in welcoming Jo to the organisation.
Thank you for your continued support.
All the best,
Norma

| | Jo Derrick announced as new Staf CEO
Jo Derrick has recently been appointed as the new Staf CEO, and will commence her role on 1st October 2019. Find out more about the appointment, including reflections from Jo and outgoing CEO, Norma Corlette, on our website article below. |
| | | We are delighted that Tony Bloemendaal, a fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy founded by world-renowned trauma expert Dr Bruce Perry, will join us for this exciting one-day trauma training event. Tony will also be joined by his colleague Dr Roland Verdouw, a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Robin Fancourt Memorial Scholar with the ChildTrauma Academy.
This learning will be invaluable to frontline workers, or those who support them, who want to learn more about neglect and trauma, as well as practical skills to improve their professional quality of life. This will, in turn, allow them to bring their ‘whole self’ to work and deliver the relationship-based practice we know is key to healing from trauma for young people.
Early-bird rates for this event will be closing soon – make sure you don’t miss out!

| This event has been created exclusively for local authority managers to give you space to discuss the issues that matter to you, given your unique statutory responsibility in delivering service for care leavers.
We held our inaugural local authority forum in February, where we discussed issues such as Continuing Care, the Care Experienced Bursary and out-of-local authority placements.
Our second local authority members’ forum will focus on the issues that are live for you – and we want to hear from you, our members, in shaping the day’s content. Get in touch with pamela@staf.scot if you have something you wish to add to the agenda.
|
| | | Following our previous Care Inspectorate Roundtable in February, where we discussed the rollout of new inspections based on the Health and Social Care Standards, we are delighted to announce a new roundtable event where we will be joined by Care Inspectorate CEO Peter Macleod.
Peter will talk about his vision for the Care Inspectorate and involve us in a conversation about compassionate care and cultural safety.
|
| | | Meeting since 2014, the Implications of Continuing Care focus group offers a safe place to discuss issues and practice arising from Part 11 of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014.

This meeting will see us engage with colleagues from across Scotland and the Scottish Government.
|
| | | Our Care Leavers into Employment focus group tackles the issues faced by young people in both accessing and sustaining employment. This group brings together workers from across the public and third sector to discuss and dissect current practice issues.
Our most recent focus groups meetings have discussed the Scottish Government’s proposed Job Grant; engaged with DWP representatives on issues surrounding care leavers and the benefits system; and shared best practice from around the country. |
