Subject: Staf's March e-News

Dear Friend,

This month members will have noticed some clear examples of how much Staf’s influence is growing.

We held a roundtable with the Care Inspectorate – exclusively for our members – to hear more about how they are developing a new framework for inspections.

Through my role on The Care Review, Staf was also asked to consult with members on a draft definition of love. If you’ve been at one of our events this month you will know how energetic the conversation was on this issue – we will now ensure your voice is heard.

I also know many of you have issues around the SAAS Care Experienced Bursary so we received an update on the issue from CELCIS at our first Local Authority Members’ Forum and we’re now going to pass your views directly on to The Scottish Government.

We’re using technology to reach members too. Our very own Pamela Graham had a fascinating chat with Pauline Connelly at Tremanna children’s home in Falkirk in the first edition of our new Staf podcast: ‘The Forum’. It’s well worth a listen!

We know that many of our members are facing financial challenges and that this can be a barrier to attending events. That’s why I’m pleased to say that all members who renew this year will now be able to attend Forums as well as Focus Groups for free from now until April 2020.

Of course, it is only because of the support given to us by more than 70 members, including every council in Scotland, that Staf has real influence. So I want to say a big thank you to all of our members for your continued support – thank you for being part of our family.

All the best,

Norma

A Day with Dr. Karen Treisman:
supporting the workforce to become trauma-informed and trauma-responsive

Wednesday 8th May 2019 | 8.45am - 5pm, Glasgow
With limited tickets now available, don't miss your chance to attend this much anticipated event. Clinical Psychologist Dr Karen Treisman will lead this special day-long event to give you the tools you need to support a trauma-informed organisational culture.

Dr Treisman has worked in children’s services for many years and is a specialist in supporting systems to move towards being, and to sustain, trauma-informed and trauma-responsive practice.

At this exciting event, Dr Treisman will take us through the four Rs of a trauma-informed system, where we realise the impact of trauma; recognise the signs of trauma; resist re-traumatisation; and respond by fully infusing trauma knowledge into everything they do.

This event has been created exclusively for local authority managers to give you space to discuss the issues that matter to you, given your unique statutory responsibility in delivering service for care leavers.

We held our inaugural local authority forum last month, where we discussed issues such as Continuing Care, the SAAS Care Experienced Bursary and out-of-local authority placements.

Our second local authority members’ forum will focus on the issues that are live for you – and we want to hear from you, our members, in shaping the day’s content. Get in touch with pamela@staf.scot if you have any points of discussion you wish to add to the agenda.

In partnership with other organisations, we are hosting an International Child Trauma Conference - More than My Trauma - in 2020, featuring world-renowned trauma expert Dr Bruce Perry. Our partners for the event are Kibble, Children in Scotland, Clackmannanshire Educational Psychology Service, Aberlour and Seamab.

Be the first to get the details as they're announced - sign up to the mailing list today.

Our longest standing focus group is the Supported Lodgings and Supported Carers group. This group brings together those who run schemes across Scotland to share practice, ideas and importantly to feel a sense of community with each other. This meeting will be chaired by The Good Shepherd Centre and we will be discussing practice issues raised by members.

In addition, we will input into a Scottish Government questionnaire which seeks to find out if charitable organisations providing supported accommodation in the private rented sector face unintended constraints as a result of the introduction of the Private Residential Tenancy under the Private Housing (Tenancies) (Scotland) Act 2016.

You can find out more about the questionnaire here.
Meeting since 2014, the Implications of Continuing Care focus group offers a safe place to discuss issues and practice arising from Part 11 of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014.

At this meeting we will continue to share practice and discuss issues surrounding Continuing Care and its implementation.

This meeting will have a specific focus on issues surrounding residential care. We will also be joined by colleagues from The Care Review.

Our Care Leavers into Employment focus group tackles the issues faced by young people in both accessing and sustaining employment.

At our last meeting we discussed our organisational response to the Scottish Government's Job Grant Consultation. If you would like to contribute to this response or have any questions, please email lewis@staf.scot.

At our next meeting we will share case studies on the good practice being carried out by you our members to support care leavers into employment. We will also refine our focus to enable the group to influence local and national policy.
