| Dear Friend,
Norma is enjoying a well-deserved break and, as I write, is in Australia celebrating the wedding of her son. We wish the happy couple all the best and look forward to Norma returning to us next week.
We were delighted this month to welcome Nicola Sturgeon to Staf's office. The First Minister joined us to meet care leavers and workers to talk about the importance of relationships.
On leaving, she told me how it was particularly special to meet the young people and workers together - and I completely agree. You can read more in our blog below.
I am also delighted to confirm that our one-day training event with Dr Karen Treisman is now sold out. 'Navigating the Iceberg: A Day with Dr Karen Treisman' is shaping up to be a really exciting event! if you missed out this time, you can join our waiting list here.
There's also been a flurry of statistics this month that are relevant to the work of our members. We've summarised points in the latest children's social work statistics, including the first Continuing Care figures. And we've blogged on the latest poverty figures too.
We also enjoyed meeting with our first group of young people involved in our Youth Justice Voices project. If you have any young people who you think would like to participate in this work, contact Ruth in our team - it's a real chance for them to make their voices heard.
Finally, I want to thank our Care Leavers into Employment Focus Group, who contributed to our Job Grant Consultation response, which has been submitted today. We're asking for clarity on the definition of care leaver and an amendment to eligibility to ensure no care leavers miss out.
From meeting the First Minister to influencing policy and engaging with young people, it's been a busy month - Staf continues to make our members voice heard on the issues that matter.

| | | Meeting since 2014, the Implications of Continuing Care focus group offers a safe place to discuss issues and practice arising from Part 11 of the Children and Young People (Scotland) Act 2014.
At this meeting we will continue to share practice and discuss issues surrounding Continuing Care and its implementation.
This meeting will have a specific focus on issues surrounding residential care. We will also be joined by colleagues from The Care Review.

| | | Our Care Leavers into Employment focus group tackles the issues faced by young people in both accessing and sustaining employment.
At our last meeting we discussed our organisational response to the Scottish Government's Job Grant Consultation and shared practice happening across the country to support care leavers.
At our next meeting we will discuss case studies on the good practice being carried out by you, our members, to support care leavers into employment. We will also refine our focus to enable the group to influence local and national policy.

| | | | Our longest standing focus group is the Supported Lodgings and Supported Carers group. This group brings together those who run schemes across Scotland to share practice, ideas and importantly to feel a sense of community with each other.
Join us on the 5th June where the meeting will focus on training for carers. Members are asked to bring any materials that they currently use. |

| | Staf and CYCJ would like to invite young people aged 16-25 with experience of care and the criminal justice system to join the group for our first planning session. This is a fun and informal session for young people to get together, share experiences and decide on future group activities.

| | Navigating the Iceberg: A Day with Dr Karen Treisman

| | This one-day training event is designed for all of those working with young people who want to deliver a shift in culture within their organisation towards trauma-informed and trauma-responsive practice.
Dr Karen Treisman will set out practical ways that you can deliver this shift in culture by navigating the ‘iceberg’ that so often sinks organisational change.
We understand that we cannot achieve the culture shift we want to see if we do not understand this ‘iceberg’ – both the visible aspect (how we are expected to work) and the invisible (how we work in reality).
Within this context, of a system that is itself stressed, Dr Karen Treisman will explore the practical ways that attendees can lead and deliver a trauma-informed, trauma-responsive culture in their organisation.

| | This event has been created exclusively for local authority managers to give you space to discuss the issues that matter to you, given your unique statutory responsibility in delivering service for care leavers.
We held our inaugural local authority forum last month, where we discussed issues such as Continuing Care, the Care Experienced Bursary and out-of-local authority placements.
Our second local authority members’ forum will focus on the issues that are live for you – and we want to hear from you, our members, in shaping the day’s content. Get in touch with pamela@staf.scot if you have any points of discussion you wish to add to the agenda. |
