Subject: Springing into action

Staf March newsletter: The latest news, updates and opportunities for care leavers and the workforce.

Dear Friend

Spring has finally sprung and that extra hour of daylight in the evening’s makes such a huge difference and marks the end of another busy month.

Thank you to many of you who joined us for our Staf Summit. It was wonderful to have so many passionate, likeminded delegates in one room and we were especially pleased to have a large contingent of care experienced people as presenters and guests. You can find the resources including speaker presentations, photos of the day and videos on our Summit Resource page.

We were delighted to take the key action points from the Summit to the Cross Party Group on Care Leavers. Our convenor Paul O’Kane and CPG member Paul McLennan MSP, who is now Minister for Housing, now have some action points to follow up on and we hope to share with you any developments arising from these conversations including meeting with the new First Minister, Humza Yousaf, his Deputy First Minister, Shona Robison who spoke at the Summit, and Natalie Don, the new Minister for Children, Young People and Keeping the Promise. We are buoyed to see Humza’s commitment to Keeping The Promise is one of his top priorities following his appointment and we will meet with him and his Ministerial team to ensure that the promises made to care leavers and the workforce are kept and our campaign to secure a Guaranteed Income pilot for care leavers is realised.

The next meeting for the CPG takes place in September and will be looking at the theme of Education. If you would like to be involved or have any suggestions of future topics please email marion@staf.scot. We are particularly hoping to attract more care experienced people to the meetings and to the agenda creation so please do share with anyone you think might be interested.

A key element of the Promise is around being trauma informed and last week I had the pleasure of delivering our trauma informed action plan workshops across the country. Thank you to those who attended; we will take forward some of the reflections and I’ll share more about this in next months’ newsletter.

Another vital part of the Promise is changing the way we, and society at large, talk about care experience. The Each and Every Child initiative is making great strides in this field and our team learnt from them this week and they will also be delivering webinars open to the workforce which we are hosting in June and September. Book your place, which are free to Staf membership organisations, here.

In other developments, Staf are going to take on the hosting role of the Participation Network from CELCIS following 5 years of successful #partycipation. Open to anyone involved in participation work in any sector, you can sign up to the mailing list here

My final note is a thank you and fond farewell to Alex Comrie, our wonderful Administration Officer who I am sure many of you will have come into contact with over his 7 years with Staf. Alex has been a great source of support and will be missed by the team. Thank you and all the very best in your retirement Alex. Annie Wildman Annie@staf.scot will be the new point of contact here at Staf for any membership queries.

Best wishes,

Jo Derrick

Youth Just Us - Care and Justice Experienced Steering Group

This month we’re delighted to welcome Iain Corbett from CYCJ on board, supporting Youth Just Us. After linking up with the group in March Iain said:

‘I was delighted to come along to my first session at Youth Just Us as I’ve been following their important work for the last few years. The group were really welcoming and there was a healthy dose of banter. I’m excited to be supporting the work going forward. It’s a privilege to be working alongside a group who have already shaped and influenced so much and can’t wait to be alongside the group as they continue to make change.’

Do you know someone aged 16-25 who has experience of the care/justice systems, who would be interested in using their lived experience to influence change? This video gives you a sense of the group and the kind of things they we get up to. To find out about getting involved contact ruth@staf.scot.

Youth Just Us would also like to thank the National Lottery for their ongoing support. This month marks a year of the National Lottery being our primary funders – we’ll be sharing some of the things that our young people have achieved during that time soon, so watch this space! ICYMI, we branched out into Aberdeen for the first time in February. If you know any young people who’d be keen to get involved up North, contact chris.kelly@staf.scot

You can keep up to date with the work of Youth Just Us and Inside Out via our Twitter account @YJVScotland

The Real Toolkit

This year we will be continuing to work with our advisory group to keep the guides updated. Please get in touch if you would like to contribute any content to the Toolkit.

This month's featured guide is for the workforce 'Even the best can be better - how to create relational training for staff'

You can follow us on Twitter and Instagram to keep up with our progress.

National Leadership Network (NLN) which Staf are lead hosts of alongside our partners at CYCJ, Columba 1400, Resilience Learning Partnership and Who Cares? Scotland.

Steering Group

The newly formed Steering Group have recently met to discuss how they are going to meet, how meetings will run and consider how decisions will be made. They are also meeting with NLN staff for 1-1 sessions too. They decided that the NLN website that has been produced should be run for a year to see how effective it is and have set up a Website Working Group. They are keen to try and get together in person again to build relationships within the team too.

National Leadership Network Consultants

The 4 NLN Consultants are starting to work on the various specific tasks including supporting the Life Changes Trust legacy, supporting roadshow/national events, volunteering, and supporting the development of the Steering Group. The group are currently making the final decisions on the NLN hoodies.

Roadshows

The NLN were asked to attend the Columba 1400 East Lothian Care Fest this month (see more info below). A roadshow session in Fife should happen next month and we are still scoping out the possibility of engaging with children’s houses in Dundee.

Engagement

NLN staff had the pleasure of attending the Staf Summit this month. This was a great opportunity to engage with various partners in person which was a fantastic experience.

NLN staff met with staff from Glasgow City Council this month who are keen to develop a local Champs Board. One of the staff members has worked for the NLN and found out about the job she is doing via an email from the NLN distribution list!

National Leadership Network hosts

NLN staff have also taken part in a podcast recording with a leadership focus hosted by the Resilience Learning Partnership and Brigid Russell. Gary and Lisa were asked to give input into the Leaders with Lived Experience series. This links in with the two sessions that also featured 6 other people from Team NLN.

Gary and Lisa were also lucky enough to be asked to take part in another podcast hosted by RLP. This was part of their Authentic Voice Podcast focusing on embedding lived experience and how this can work with children, young people and families. This was a great opportunity to have a collective discussion with friends of the NLN Jacqui Dunbar, Gordon main and of course Shumela Ahmed.

Columba 1400 asked the NLN to be part of their East Lothian Care Fest this month. The NLN had an info stand which created an opportunity to engage a number of local school pupils of various ages.

Feedback

The NLN recently passed its first official birthday. To mark this a year one report is almost complete which details some of the impact and challenges of the last 12 months. A lengthy report has been produced for our funders but an easy to read, colourful, four-page report is nearly complete. This will be shared with friends, partners, and allies in due course. We have asked many of the people we have engaged with over the last year for their thoughts and snapshot of this is below:

“The biggest highlight was seeing the consultants contribute to the forming of NLN and steering us towards the path we are on, in addition to the forming of the oversight board. To achieve these things in a fairly short time has been a great success”. (Ross Gibson, CYCJ)

“It's hard to find information online about NLN - there's good links to other organisations such as CYCJ and STAF but a dedicated website that doesn't use the no longer active Life Changes Trust portal would be good to see.” (NLN ally)

“A wee bit more visibility would be amazing.” (NLN ally)

“Please include parents’, carers…and your impact and reach may widen.” (Parent)

"Keep up the good work! You are making an incredible difference to the lives of those who are involved in the care experienced community."(NLN ally)

Policy and Practice Updates

Staying Connected: Care-experienced children and young people with a sibling in prison or secure accommodation

The Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration and Families Outside aims to address the gap in knowledge around ‘looked after’ children and young people’s experiences of having a brother or sister in prison or secure accommodation, exploring the issues this group can face and looking at how they can be addressed.

Please check out the video created by a group of care-experienced young people working as Consultants on this project to find out more about what taking part involves for children and young people.

Staf Summit Resources

We are delighted to share the many resources from this month's Staf Summit including speaker presentations, video links, speaker summaries and pics of the day.

Care experienced views sought on Continuing Care
CELCIS are asking young care experienced people on their views around Continuing Care. If you know a young person aged between 12-26 who would like to participate in an interactive focus group, please email celcis.cc@strath.ac.uk or text 07967 339 359 Participants will receive a £10 voucher.

Increase to Care Experienced Bursary
The Scottish Government have announced that for education year 2023 - 2024 the care experienced bursary will be increasing by £900. Staf CEO Jo Derrick shares her thoughts on the news.

Member of the Month: East Lothian Council

East Lothian Council have been a long term member of Staf. At the Staf Summit we heard how East Lothian Council had partnered up with Rock Trust to provide student supported accommodation for care leavers, as part of the Life Changes Trust Home and Belonging Initiative.

The Children's Services team also help to coordinate the East Lothian Champs Board which recently hosted an Each and Every Child introduction to framing course for corporate parents in the area.

We are also delighted to be working in partnership with them and others on the development of a truma informed and relationship based practice online Open University course. You can find out more about this exciting project here.
