Subject: A short but busy month and lots more ahead

Staf February newsletter: The latest news, updates and opportunities for care leavers and the workforce.

Dear Friend

I don’t know about you, but a combination of surprisingly warm weather at the weekend and then a chance to see the aurora borealis (I didn’t but there was still hope!) has been a real tonic for me, as has reflecting on the last 4 weeks.

It was a busy month in the care experienced calendar as we marked the three year anniversary of the publication of The Promise and we celebrated Care Day. It was great to see so many of our members and allies taking these opportunities to call for action and change whilst shining a light on the brilliant work being done to support care experienced people across the country.

We know the value of listening to those with lived experience and this forms an integral part of our Governance which is why we are currently recruiting for a care experienced board member. Thanks to our care experienced board member, Rosie Moore, for sharing her insights into what it’s like to be on the Staf board. You can find out about the role and how to apply here. May we also take this opportunity to congratulate Rosie on becoming a mum to the wonderful Darcy!

Here at Staf we have been busy organising a number of workforce events, both online and in person. Thank you to everyone who attended our #KeepingThePromise trauma informed lessons learned webinars last week. It was great to be able to share openly and honestly about our journey so far and hopefully inspire those who attended to think about how they might undergo their own trauma informed internal assessment. For those who are in a position to make such changes, we encourage you to sign up for our in-person workshops where we will be sharing the lessons but also, trauma informed psychologist Eva Roussou will be on hand to help attendees plan out their next steps. Our Glasgow date is almost fully booked but we still have availability in Stirling, Edinburgh and Dundee. Book your place here.

Speaking of in person events, our Staf Summit takes place next week (where has the time gone?) We can’t wait to welcome our many delegates and speakers including Children in Scotland, The National House Project and Rock Trust alongside our keynote speaker, Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Housing and Local Government Shona Robison.

We will be sharing the calls to action and feedback from the Summit at the Cross Party Group on Care Leavers meeting on Thursday 16th March 6pm (via Zoom), ensuring that tangible action points regarding housing policy and practice can be taken forward. If you would like to be a member or join the meeting as a guest, please email marion@staf.scot.

Our focus groups and forums continue to be a great source of networking and learning for our members and I was delighted to chair the Supported Lodging, Supported Carers meeting last week and I know Bobby Jones, who facilitated the Implications of Continuing Care focus group enjoyed meeting everyone and is looking forward to our next forum, Care Leavers into Employment, Education and Training, where we will be hearing about the recent research conducted by UCAS on the experiences of care experienced people accessing further and higher education. All our events can be booked online here.

As you may know, thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund we are expanding the work of Youth Justice Voices, our care and justice experienced participation project to the north east of Scotland. Our Youth Justice Participation Worker Chris Kelly held the first meeting this month and has shared what happened it his great blog. Check it out here.

Finally, the Learning Channel which will be hosting the care experienced legacy work of the Life Changes Trust is beginning to take shape, thanks to some digital know how from the Scottish Tech Army. We’re currently looking for some members of the workforce, carers and care experienced individuals to join our user research group so if you want to use your experience to shape this exciting new resource then email dawn@staf.scot. You can follow the Learning Channel’s progress here.

Thank you, as always, for your time and commitment. As we approach March we look forward to longer, warmer days and welcoming you to one of our forthcoming events.

Best wishes,

Jo Derrick

National Leadership Network (NLN) which Staf are lead hosts of alongside our partners at CYCJ, Columba 1400, Resilience Learning Partnership and Who Cares? Scotland.

Steering Group: An induction day for the Steering Group took place on Saturday the 4th of February in Glasgow which was supported by staff from Columba 1400. This was the first-time the Steering Group had the chance to meet in real life. The day had activities focusing on leadership, values, co-production and information on what the Steering Group’s specific role could be. Host organisations sent in videos to watch detailing their roles in the NLN. A lunch of pizza and pasta was organised by one the NLN Consultants. Information on the day has been compiled and shared with hosts, those who couldn’t attend the day and the NLN Consultants. The Steering Group have already organised the agenda for their first online meeting. When the Steering Group were asked their thoughts on the day only using one word they said:

“Good, enjoyable, keen, optimistic, powerful, energised and interesting”.
“Exciting” was said by four different people too!

National Leadership Network Consultants: Recently three of the NLN consultants were recorded talking about their highlights from being part of the Interim Oversight Board, what could have been better and what their thoughts were for 2023. This included:

“I absolutely loved doing the interviews… I don’t think they should be really serious; they should be fun.” “I guess one of the things I enjoyed from the year was maybe the roadshows… I think it was just really fun, all the different things that went on. I think that was one of the highlights of the year.”

The NLN consultants are currently finishing off working on the final design for NLN hoodies and discussing what areas of the NLN they will focus on next. They are also planning an in person meeting with staff from the NLN.

Roadshows: The NLN visited Rossie on the 10th of February. This was a great opportunity to talk to both staff and young people about the NLN, leadership and more. Next stop on the roadshow will be Dundee. Who Cares? Scotland staff are currently supporting us to engage with local children’s houses and foster carers.

Resilience Learning Partnership (RLP) podcast: Six people working for the NLN got the opportunity to take part in a podcast with a leadership focus this month. This is part of RLP’s ‘Leaders with Lived Experience’ podcast series. Those involved talked about what leadership meant to them, who were some of their favourite leaders, if they saw themselves as leaders and more. Watch this space for more info in due course.

National Leadership Network partners meeting: Representatives from the NLN host organisations continue to meet monthly. At the February meeting a busy agenda included partner updates, the proposed new NLN website, individual grants, end of year reporting and the NLN budget.

Life Changes Trust (LCT) legacy projects: Representatives from the four main LCT legacy projects meet monthly. At the February meeting the group talk through updates and reporting. All agreed the meetings are a great place to share resources and talk through any issues collectively.

Celebrating Success: Young people working with the National Leadership Network have been nominated for a national award for their consistent hard work, dedication and drive.

Homelessness figures on the rise
The latest statistic on homelessness reveal a worsening situation in Scotland with more people than prior to the pandemic classified as homeless. We know that care experienced people are disproportionately experience homelessness and as a result will make up a proportion of those recorded here.

Study into number of estimated births of care experienced young people.
CELCIS was commissioned by the Why Not? Trust to estimate the number of care experienced young people who have given birth as the numbers had not been previously recorded and therefore services could not be provided sufficiently. Along with the estimates, which are similar to that of the general population, the report also shared what support care experienced parents to be require.

Member of the Month: Helm

Helm is grassroots specialist youthwork provider. They have worked inclusively in Dundee for over 30 years, enabling over 200 young people every year to make the best possible transition to adult life.

Hame is Helm's first housing project, in partnership with Hillcrest Homes

and has been set up as part of the Life Changes Trust, Home and Belonging Fund, alongside additional funding from Nationwide and NHS Tayside Community Innovation Fund.

With many of Dundee’s young people facing uncertainty and instability around their living arrangements, they can often find themselves at risk of homelessness as young as 16. These homes will help create a stable living space for these young people, which in turn lets them focus on building a future for themselves.

The homes have been co-designed by the young people who are employed on the project team. A focus of the Hame project is to ensure the tenants are involved in decision making and gaining life skills.

Helm are currently recruiting for a Housing Support Manager to lead the Hame team. Click here for more information.
