Dear Friend,

I know that January can be a busy month – making new plans and resolutions, and filling our diaries with new and exciting opportunities. With that in mind, I wanted to give you a quick update on what’s happening at Staf.

First and foremost, I’m delighted to announce our first-ever Staf Summit for senior leaders in local government and the wider children’s sector in Glasgow on 11 March 2020.

We know that children’s services are being tasked with delivering new national priorities, against a backdrop of increasing demand and significantly reduced budgets. That’s why the Staf Summit will focus on how relationships are key to the whole-systems change required to improve lives.

We’ll hear how Brighton and Hove put relationships at the heart of their systems and practice and, by doing so, improved lives, increased work satisfaction, increased staff retention and reduced complaints.

Secure your place at the Staf Summit by 7th February to take advantage of our early-bird rate or save by booking a block of five tickets. Book on our website here.
Our projects are also continuing to do a great job building relationships to improve lives too. Staf’s Project Return has already struck a chord with the launch of their Care-Experienced Choir. If you know a young person who is a talented tenor, marvellous mezzo-soprano or just an enthusiastic car singer tell them to get involved

And speaking of relationships, our Building Relationships advisory group launched on the 16th January, find out more about the meeting and the next steps for the project in this blog

Youth Justice Voices has continued to gather pace, with further 'Artivism' project sessions, as well work on rights with young people in HMOYI Polmont taking place this month. I am also delighted to welcome a new member of the Staf team, Kevin Lafferty, who has joined us as a Participation Consultant supporting the work of Youth Justice Voices.

Last but by no means least, I want to extend an invitation to all of Staf’s members to attend our Annual General Meeting on 10th February at our offices in Glasgow or online. I’m delighted that Jade Kilkenny, Staf board member and TEDx speaker, will be presenting at the meeting. Watch the video below to see why we’re so excited to hear from Jade.

As ever, watch this space – our next newsletter will be packed full of new opportunities for the year ahead but in the meantime, find our schedule of events here.

Until next time,

Jo

Staf AGM
Staf will be hosting its Annual General Meeting on 10th February from 10.00am - 11.30am in the 2nd Floor Training Room within Edward House on 199 Sauchiehall Street.

The Annual General Meeting will provide an opportunity for members to reflect on the past year of activity from the organisation; meet our CEO, Jo Derrick; and hear a presentation from Staf Board member and TedX speaker, Jade Kilkenny.

2019 has been a year of change and of growth for Staf, with a new leadership team of Jo Derrick, CEO, SallyAnn Kelly, Board Chair, and Carole Dearie, Board Vice-Chair inducted into new roles.
2019 also saw the continued development of Staf's political influence, the delivery of a range of national events, and the launch of three dynamic projects focused on justice (Youth Justice Voices), trauma (Project Return) and relationships (Building Relationships).

Places are free, and exclusive to, Staf members. To reserve your place at the AGM please complete a form on our website. If you are unable to attend in person, you can also complete a form to attend electronically by Zoom.
Staf Summit
Staf is hosting a Summit for Senior Leaders within local government and the wider children's sector, including Chief Executive Officers, Chief Social Workers, Directors, Service Managers, and other senior officers, focusing on relationship-based practice and whole-system change.

At the Summit we will hear contributions from a suite of speakers that will highlight the importance of relationships from a breadth of perspectives: lived experience, systems leadership, academia, and practical application in both a local authority and third-sector setting. This full-day summit will feature:
  • Prof Gillian Ruch, Professor of Social Work at University of Sussex, an expert in the field of child care social work and relationship-based practice.
  • Tom Stibbs, Principal Social Worker at Brighton and Hove City Council, on how they delivered and sustained relationship-based whole-systems change.
  • Contributions from the Designed by Society project in Falkirk, which is putting love and relationships at the heart of service delivery.
  • The Life Changes Trust on how they’re taking a transformational approach to relationships, including through their network of Champions Boards.
  • Young people with care-experience on why relationships matter, including Jade Kilkenny (Community Justice Scotland Apprentice, Staf Board Member and TEDx Speaker) and Kevin Lafferty (Participation Consultant with our Youth Justice Voices project).
To secure you and your team’s place at the early-bird rate of £125.00 per delegate, or £500.00 for five delegates, you can book tickets on our website here. Ticket prices include lunch and refreshments, with the early-bird rate closing on the 7th February 2020.
